David De Gea says that Manchester United must qualify for the Champions League next season "no matter what".

United return from the international break with a home game against relegation-threatened Aston Villa, with the Red Devils hoping to take one step closer to Champions League qualification.

A 2-1 victory over their closest top-four rivals, Liverpool, nearly two weeks ago leaves Louis van Gaal's men in the driving seat, with a five-point lead over the Merseysiders heading into the final eight games of the season.

However, with games against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal remaining, United know that any slip-ups could be punished in their quest to return to Europe's top table after a one-year absence.

"We have to qualify for the Champions League, no matter what," said keeper De Gea.

"We already missed out last season, and a team like Manchester United cannot do that two years in a row."

This season has represented not only an improvement in United's fortunes but a personal triumph for the Spaniard, who has received rave reviews for his performances thus far.

The 24-year-old has credited the trials of playing in the Premier League for his development, as well as the competition posed by experienced back-up shot-stopper Victor Valdes, who was drafted in on a free transfer this season.

"I'm a composed, calm type, which helps me in my profession.

"As a keeper, you need to convey a sense of calm to the rest of the team.

"But, truth be told, English football has changed me a great deal.

"I've developed a lot physically, I have greatly improved my concentration and have generally improved all aspects of my game.

"I was very young when I came here but, four years on, things are very good overall. This league really suits me, as you learn a lot here.

"Victor Valdes and I work very well together - I'm very happy to be with him.

"I'm learning so much from him, not just in goalkeeping terms given his immense experience, but also as a person.

"He's a very straightforward guy with a lot of character. Moreover, he's always ready to lend a hand, trying to help out with his advice, especially during games."
