Louis van Gaal has played down his role in Manchester United's revival, claiming his players should take all the credit for their turnaround in form.
United head into Sunday’s Manchester derby in third place, one point above defending Premier League champions City.
That is in stark contrast to the situation the last time the two sides met when a 1-0 win for City saw United drop to 10th in the table last November.
Since then, Van Gaal’s side have lost just twice and are close to securing Champions League football for next season.
But the Dutchman believes it is the United squad and not him who should be applauded if they do secure a top-four finish.
"The key are the players," Van Gaal told MUTV. "The players are developing themselves in the process we have done with each other, and I believe it is not only the last five matches.
"In more than 20 games we have only lost two times. It is a long row of matches.
"You have very good performances and you have also bad performances but at the end the result is good and the key is always the players. They have to do it at the right time. There is always resistance.
"We have one more point than City now, and we are one point behind second in the table (Arsenal) so that speaks for themselves."
Van Gaal has resisted the temptation to recall Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao in recent games but has not ruled out making changes to his team.
"Every player is pushing, not only Angel di Maria, every player who is training in the first squad because they want to do their utmost best,” he said.
"I played in training on Friday 11 against 11 and the white team was very good and the white team was not the basic line-up so they are pushing always.
"And I like that. I said that to all the players that I like the fighting spirit of every player.
"Never change a winning team is an English expression but I have always my eyes open.
"It is not always like that, never changing a team."
Tune in for the Manchester derby, live on Super Sunday from 3.30pm, on Sky Sports 1.
