Tom Cleverley: Had been in talks with Aston Villa and Everton
Tom Cleverley will remain at Manchester United despite Aston Villa and Everton making last ditch attempts to sign the England midfielder on deadline day.
The 25-year-old spent the majority of September 1 at Villa’s training ground at Bodymoor Heath, were permanent deal was in place for Cleverly ready to sign.
But after learning of a possible move to Everton, which emerged just a few hours before the transfer window slammed shut at 11pm, Cleverley travelled to Merseyside where a permanent deal was not yet drafted for him to complete.
And the former Watford youngster has therefore been forced to return to Old Trafford despite being told by new boss Louis van Gaal that he is not in line for first-team football this season.
Cleverley is one of a number of players seemingly surplus to Van Gaal’s requirements, with Danny Welbeck joining Arsenal in a deal worth £16million and Javier Hernandez moving to Real Madrid on a season-long loan.
Van Gaal did bring reinforcements on deadline day, however, completing the signing of Daley Blind from Ajax and a season-long loan deal for Radamel Falcao from Monaco.
