Manchester United will have to meet a £40million release clause if they are to sign central defensive target Nicolas Otamendi, according to reports.
The tough-tackling Valencia centre-back is a target for United boss Louis van Gaal, according to the Daily Express, but United will not be able to land the Argentine on the cheap.
Central defenders Thomas Vermaelen, Gerard Pique, Mats Hummels and Ron Vlaar have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford over the summer and Van Gaal is desperate to strengthen his rearguard after witnessing United's defensive shortcomings first hand, a fact which has not been lost on the rest of Europe.
Otamendi, who has been called up by Argentina for their forthcoming friendlies with Brazil and Hong Kong, signed for the La Liga side from Porto for £11.7million in February this year, but was immediately loaned to Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro after an administrative mistake.
The 26-year-old signed a five-year deal at the Mestalla on July 1 and the La Liga outfit will be unwilling to let a player leave, who sporting director Francisco Rufete described as a "world class talent" and "a strategic incorporation for our project".
That is unlikely to put of United though having already splashed out around £170million this year with the high-profile arrivals of Angel di Maria, Falcao, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw.
