Rio Ferdinand: Preparing for his Old Trafford return

QPR boss Harry Redknapp hopes defender Rio Ferdinand will not be overawed by his return to Manchester United on Sunday.

After 12 years at Old Trafford, where he made 305 Premier League appearances, Ferdinand joined QPR on a free transfer in the summer window and has been an ever-present figure so far this season.

Ahead of his first return to United, Redknapp has warned the 35-year-old that he must concentrate on his own game rather than focusing on his former team-mates.

“I just want Rio to play his game. (Robin) Van Persie can get it on to his left foot and smack one in from 30 yards. We don’t need Rio to tell us that,” Redknapp said.

“You can worry too much. In fact, you can drive yourself mad in this game by worrying too much about the opposition.

“When we went to Spurs and lost 4-0 we were too concerned with how we were going to drop back into our shape. So, in the end, everyone has gone out there worried about what we were going to do and where we’ve got to be at 3.10pm.

“In the end, you forget to play yourselves. There’s nothing like playing with energy and getting after teams. For me, that’s still the key. You’ve got to be competing.”

Redknapp has also warned United that it will take time for their new signings to adapt to life in England with Radamel Falcao, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Angel di Maria all set to make their Old Trafford debuts on Sunday.

“It takes a little while. In the early games they had other players in that team who are good players, but they would not scare you,” he said.

“They will step up a level now, because they have brought different players in. I’m sure they will get stronger.”
