Bryan Robson believes that Wayne Rooney’s ability means he should be the next England captain.

Robson, who is Manchester United’s longest serving captain in the club’s history after wearing the armband for 12 years, raised concerns about the amount of standout candidates, but still backed Rooney to take over from Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool midfielder Gerrard confirmed his retirement from international football on Monday and Robson believes Rooney should succeed him.

He told Sky Sports News: “You look at all the candidates and there’s not many about. For years you have always had two or three players who could actually be England captain but at the moment I don’t see a standout one.

“Wayne Rooney is our best player as far as I’m concerned at this moment in time and maybe Wayne is the one who will get the armband.”

Robson also thinks that United needs to replace both Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, who joined Inter Milan and Juventus respectively, with experienced players.

“We have lost Nemanja [Vidic] and we have lost Patrice [Evra] and so they are going to need replacing to a certain degree,” he said.

“We have still got Chris Smalling and Phil Jones at the club but I would like to see maybe another experienced centre-half come in.”

The ex-midfielder is also of the belief that not being in Europe will help Louis van Gaal to make sure the squad know exactly what he wants from them and will help United challenge for the title this season.

He added: “Not being in Europe where the lads have been used to playing at the weekend and then midweek and then at the weekend again means they’re going to get a few weeks where they won’t have a game.

“The preparation time for the manager is going to be really good to get the players to understand exactly what he wants and whatever role he wants them to play in. So I do think we can bounce back straight away and challenge for the title.”
