Juan Mata loving life under Louis van Gaal as new manager lays down the law at Manchester United

Louis van Gaal is implementing changes at Old Trafford and says every day there is progress.

Juan Mata says Manchester United's players are thriving on Louis van Gaal's straight-talking approach.

The new United manager has already made an impression in his short time in the job, trying out a new 3-5-2 system and even challenging the club on its commercial policy.

And the Dutchman's latest edict is that players should speak to each other in English.

"We only speak in English," said Mata, speaking on the club's tour of the United States. "He (van Gaal) says we have to speak in English."

"He is very good on and off the pitch. He is a good man and a great manager.

"He has a lot of experience; he has won trophies in previous teams too, so it's a good chance for me to learn from him and for us to improve as a team.

"He is demanding. He is very honest, straight, speaks with everyone to his face. I think this is good, a perfect way to do it, saying what you think about the players in front of them."

The Spaniard had the unfortunate experience of watching from the bench as van Gaal’s Netherlands team beat Spain 5-1 in their opening game of the Brazil World Cup this summer.

"That game was very, very bad for us," said Mata. "They scored five goals against Spain so he did a great job."

It was during the later stages of the World Cup that van Gaal first implemented a 3-5-2 to great success, and his first experiment with the formation at United yielded a 7-0 win over LA Galaxy this week.

Mata believes the new system could mean a chance to play in his favoured position behind the strikers, a role in which he twice won Chelsea's Player of the Year award.

Uniteds record signing at times looked less assured on the wing under David Moyes, and he said: "If I play behind the two strikers it's a good position (for me). I can look for the ball, I can try to assist or score, so I will try my best.

"I will try to score as much as I can and try to help the team from that position.”

Tom Cleverley is also welcoming the changes brought in by the new boss.

The midfielder, who got two hefty pats on the back from Van Gaal as he sat by him during the pre-match press conference ahead of a friendly against Roma, said: "I watched Holland in the World Cup and I think I can be his type of player.

"I have to show that in training and most importantly in the games. I think there is a place for me. I have to prove that."

Arturo Vidal: Juventus expect Chile midfielder to stay

Juventus general manager Giuseppe Marotta and coach Massimiliano Allegri are confident Arturo Vidal will not be lured away by Manchester United.

The Chile midfielder has been linked with a summer move to the Premier League club as new manager Louis van Gaal looks to strengthen his squad.

But Vidal, who has already ruled out a move to Old Trafford and is keen to hold talks over a new deal with Juve, remains a key part of the Serie A club’s plans.

Marotta told a press conference: “Arturo signed a contract extension last season because there was a mutual desire to continue our relationship.

“There is no reason for him to leave.

“I can confirm Vidal is happy to be with us and there’s no reason for alarm. Nobody can doubt the quality of the player, nor how strong his bond is with Juventus."

And Allegri added: “Vidal? I am not worried that we will lose him.

“The club are strengthening an already competitive group. I’m really happy.

“We will need a striker. Strengthening a club like Juve is not easy but the officials are doing good things.”

While confirming that Juve were in the market for a new forward, Marotta has ruled out a move for former Chelsea man Samuel Eto’o.

He added: “Eto’o? We have never thought about him.”

Kevin Strootman: Roma keen to retain the services of reported Manchester United target

Roma boss Rudi Garcia says highly rated Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman will not be leaving for Manchester United.

New United boss Louis van Gaal knows the 24-year-old well, having only just stood down as Netherlands manager.

And, although Strootman missed the recent World Cup due to injury, reports in Italy have claimed that the Premier League club are still interested and have put in a bid of at least £30million.

But Garcia said: “Strootman is a Roma player, he will be a Roma player this year. There is no doubt about that.

"Only he can say whether he wants to stay but it was never an issue for him to go to another club. There is no question of it."

United play Roma in a Denver friendly on Saturday but Strootman will not feature as he continues to recover from the cruciate knee ligament injury he suffered in March.

“Strootman is following a normal recovery programme,” said Garcia. “He has stayed in Boston (where Roma played earlier in the week) to work with our physios and he will start running any time soon."

Former Chelsea man Ashley Cole is likely to feature for Roma against United at the Sports Authority Field and Garcia is pleased with how the former England defender is adapting to life with his new club.

"He is keen to learn the language," said the Roma boss.

"He wants to communicate with his team-mates on the pitch in Italian, and I like and appreciate his attitude."

Bebe: Manchester United misfit has joined Benfica

Benfica have confirmed the signing of Bebe from Manchester United on a four-year contract.

The foward joined United from Portuguese club Guimaraes in a £7.4million deal in 2010 but did not make a single start in the Premier League.

He made just two appearances off the bench in the top flight, one FA Cup outing, two League Cup appearances and one in the Champions League.

United have confirmed that they will receive £2.4m for Bebe and are entitled to 50 per cent of any future transfer fees.

Bebe also spent time on loan back in Portugal with Rio Ave and Pacos de Ferreira and in Turkey with Besiktas.

He was left out of the senior United squad for their tour of the United States by new manager Louis van Gaal and his final appearance for the Red Devils was 45 minutes of action in a pre-season friendly with Southport on Tuesday.

Former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he had not seen Bebe play in the flesh before signing him.

Manchester United still global giant and prepared to spend big insists Ed Woodward

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Tuesday 22nd July 2014 21:44

Ed Woodward: Manchester United executive vice chairman is excited going into the new season

Ed Woodward: Manchester United executive vice chairman is excited going into the new season

Manchester United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward is looking forward to the squad’s tour of North America, as he insists the Old Trafford club remains the biggest in the world, writes Sky Sports News' James Cooper.

And while Woodward is not ruling out competing with the biggest spenders in the game, he is refusing to set any objectives for new manager Louis Van Gaal.

Woodward said: “We don't have a target this year. Let’s be totally clear. We don't have a target.

“I am not sitting down giving targets to anybody. We want to strive to win. That is what we want to do. That expectation comes with the history of the club. You have to accept that. I have to accept that. Everyone has to accept that. Everyone has to have that benchmark for Manchester United. That is what all the fans want. That is what our history demands. We want to win.

"There is no budget, there is money. We are in a very strong financial position. We can make big signings. That doesn’t mean we are going to throw money around. Louis is the manager. We have a lot of scouting output through the last 12 months that is flagging various things to us.

“Louis is the one who makes the ultimate decision around who he wants in his squad. I am not going to force feed him with a player he has not selected. The reality is that we're not afraid of spending significant amounts of money in the transfer market. Whether it's a record or not doesn't really resonate with us. What resonates is a top, top elite player that the manager wants that is going to be a star for Manchester United."

Woodward has been impressed by Van Gaal’s impact since the Dutchman arrived at the club less than a week ago, and only a few days after the 62-year-old guided the Netherlands to a third place finish at the World Cup.

And Woodward concedes that finding a successor to David Moyes after a season that saw United slump to seventh in the Premier League and miss out on European football was one of the biggest decisions he’s ever made.

“Yes, by some distance it is the most important job in the club. And we didn’t take the decision lightly,” Woodward said.

“We ran a process and we thought very carefully about the characteristics we were looking for in a manager. We were looking for a manager who would sync with the Manchester United philosophy.

“If you pause and take a step back, it is attacking football, it’s giving youth a chance, and both of those things are core to Louis’s philosophy of football – and a track record. If he brings so much energy to this we felt he was the right choice.”

While United endured difficulties on the pitch the club’s commercial momentum has not been affected, as Woodward points to a new sponsorship deal with US car giant Cheverolet and a world record £750m pound kit agreement with Adidas.

Woodward said: "What the deal shows and what we are seeing and everything we are doing from a commercial perspective, also from talking to agents and players about wanting to come to us, we are the biggest club in the world. There is no question in my mind about that.

“All I am saying is that there is a different expectation at this club. It is a different size in terms of interest level, fan base, a lot of what we tried to do. We also have a commercial arm that interacts with the football club in a way that doesn't disrupt the football club."

One factor that may have disrupted Manchester United in recent weeks is the departure of their Captain Nemanja Vidic, his centre-back partner Rio Ferdinand and full-back Patrice Evra. Their exits leave Louis Van Gaal short of defensive cover and relying on the likes of Johnnie Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to deputise. Luke Shaw's arrival from Southampton will certainly help but Ed Woodward is expecting his new manager to use the US Tour as a fact-finding mission to decide who stays, who goes and who comes in.

"We are still assessing things and looking at options. We are not sitting on our hands and waiting for Louis. He is indicating clearly what he wants. All I am saying is there could be some other things that happen as a result of the time he spends with the players in the next few weeks. If you think about it, for an experienced professional like him from a football perspective, maybe he knows the first 15 players really well but the next 15 not so well. He is taking time to see."

Transfer news: Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp rules out selling Marco Reus or Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels: Looks to be staying with Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has ruled out selling Marco Reus or Mats Hummels this summer, insisting that none of his club's big names will be following Robert Lewandowski out of the club.

Reus, who will miss the start of the season due to the ankle injury which also ruled him out of the World Cup, has regularly attracted interest from top European clubs while Hummels has more recently been linked with a €20million (£15.8m) bid from Manchester United.

That valuation has been branded derisory by Klopp, who has absolutely no intention of depriving himself of two key players.

"What was today's rumour? Mats to Man U? For how much? 20 million? For a sum like that, you can forget about it anyway," Klopp told the Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper.

"Marco and Mats will be playing for us next season. I can assure everybody that there is no sign at all that either of them want to leave."

Both are contracted to Dortmund until 2017, although Reus is rumoured to have a clause in his contract allowing him to leave the Westphalian club next summer for €35million (£27.7m) - the same figure Mario Gotze was bought out of his contract by Bayern Munich for last summer.

Mehdi Benatia: Continues to be linked with a move to England

Roma coach Rudi Garcia is confident highly-rated centre-half Mehdi Benatia will remain at the club.

Speculation continues to suggest that the Morocco international could soon be lured away from the Italian capital.

Manchester City are said to have held an interest in the 27-year-old for some time, while Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have all been linked with a summer approach.

Roma, however, are adamant that Benatia is not for sale.

They won the race for his signature last season as a deal was struck with Serie A rivals Udinese and Garcia is adamant that a friendly outing against Liverpool on Wednesday will not be Benatia’s last for the Giallorossi.

He said: “He’s under contract with us and for me he will be a Roma player this season.

“Mehdi is happy, motivated. He will play against Liverpool and there aren’t any problems.”

Bryan Robson believes Wayne Rooney should be the next England captain

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Tuesday 22nd July 2014 8:55

Bryan Robson believes that Wayne Rooney’s ability means he should be the next England captain.

Robson, who is Manchester United’s longest serving captain in the club’s history after wearing the armband for 12 years, raised concerns about the amount of standout candidates, but still backed Rooney to take over from Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool midfielder Gerrard confirmed his retirement from international football on Monday and Robson believes Rooney should succeed him.

He told Sky Sports News: “You look at all the candidates and there’s not many about. For years you have always had two or three players who could actually be England captain but at the moment I don’t see a standout one.

“Wayne Rooney is our best player as far as I’m concerned at this moment in time and maybe Wayne is the one who will get the armband.”

Robson also thinks that United needs to replace both Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, who joined Inter Milan and Juventus respectively, with experienced players.

“We have lost Nemanja [Vidic] and we have lost Patrice [Evra] and so they are going to need replacing to a certain degree,” he said.

“We have still got Chris Smalling and Phil Jones at the club but I would like to see maybe another experienced centre-half come in.”

The ex-midfielder is also of the belief that not being in Europe will help Louis van Gaal to make sure the squad know exactly what he wants from them and will help United challenge for the title this season.

He added: “Not being in Europe where the lads have been used to playing at the weekend and then midweek and then at the weekend again means they’re going to get a few weeks where they won’t have a game.

“The preparation time for the manager is going to be really good to get the players to understand exactly what he wants and whatever role he wants them to play in. So I do think we can bounce back straight away and challenge for the title.”
