Wayne Rooney says Roger East got Wes Brown red card wrong

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Saturday 28th February 2015 22:47

Wayne Rooney insists Wes Brown’s red card must be rescinded after the Sunderland defender was controversially sent off at Manchester United.

The forward scored both goals in a 2-0 victory, but the game was overshadowed by referee Roger East’s bizarre decision to send Brown off, even though team-mate John O’Shea had tripped Radamel Falcao.

In a statement released via the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), East insisted it was not a case of mistaken identity and he did in fact mean to send Brown off.

But Rooney, who played alongside both Brown and O’Shea for United, says the referee made a mistake.

“I don’t think it was Wes – it looked like Sheasy so the referee has got it wrong and I’m sure they will look at that and rescind Wes’ red card,” he told Sky Sports.

Rooney played up front on Saturday afternoon and scored his first league goals of 2015 as United reclaimed third position in the Premier League.

And despite a run of games in midfield, the United skipper insisted he is happy to play anywhere for Louis van Gaal.

“I have done that throughout the years whether I’ve worn the armband or not. That’s something I have always done,” he added.

“I have played in midfield before I have played out wide before. At times you have to see what is best for the team.

“That is what the manager and I have felt and that’s why I have been back in midfield. I love playing football and wherever the manager wants me to play I will play.”

Asked whether the players’ understanding of Van Gaal’s philosophy was coming together, Rooney replied: “Yes it does.

“We knew that obviously it would take time with a lot of changes and a different style of playing football. It’s probably taken a little longer than we would have liked.

“I think even last week we played well and didn’t deserve to lose the game but we’re getting there and if we can get into the top four this season we can really kick on from there.”

Wayne Rooney backs Manchester United for top four after Sunderland win

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Saturday 28th February 2015 19:15

Wayne Rooney has backed Manchester United to finish in the Premier League’s top four after their 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Rooney scored his first goal in nine league games and then grabbed his first from open play in 2015 as his double lifted United back into third in the table, two points ahead of Arsenal and four ahead of Southampton in fifth.

However, Rooney wants his side to focus on themselves as they look to return to the Champions League next season.

“There are a lot of teams in a good run of form and there are not many points between four or five teams,” he told Sky Sports.

“We have to concentrate on ourselves, pick up points and hopefully come May we’re in the right position.”

Louis van Gaal’s side bounced back from defeat at Swansea last week in perfect style at Old Trafford and Rooney was full of praise for his teammates in grinding out a win against a stubborn Sunderland side.

He added: “It’s great to score, obviously, but the three points are more important.

“After last week’s defeat, it was important we came back with a good performance and a good result.

“Sunderland made it difficult at times with a lot of men behind the ball but we were patient. We moved the ball well and created chances so I think we deserved the three points.

“We knew that was the way they were going to play. They’ve been to other big teams this season and done well. They did the same, defending well and hitting on the break.

“But we were patient and when they did win the ball our defence was pushed right up, won the ball back quickly and then we could attack again. It was a good performance but more importantly a good three points.

“We got a bit more space when they went down to 10 men which is normal but before that we were the better team.

“We should have been ahead but we kept going. It might have taken to the last five minutes to beat them because they defended very well but we kept moving it and deserved the victory.”

Manchester United's Robin van Persie set for lengthy lay-off due to ankle injury

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Friday 27th February 2015 12:48

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that striker Robin van Persie is set for a lengthy lay-off because of an ankle injury.

Van Persie, who has scored 10 goals for United this season, turned his right ankle in the closing stages of the 2-1 defeat to Swansea last Saturday and left the Liberty Stadium on crutches.

Scans have shown the injury is 'not heavy', according to Van Gaal, but he still expects the striker to be out of commission for a number of weeks.

The United boss said: "He is injured. He is the only injured player I have, so we change (Michael) Carrick for Van Persie.

"He has an ankle problem. I don't think it's very heavy but an ankle problem takes a long time. It's not one week or two weeks but we have to wait and see."

Radamel Falcao is expected to deputise in the United starting XI against Sunderland on Saturday with James Wilson ruled out with a dead leg.

Van Gaal said: "The possibilty is higher for somebody else because when a striker is away another striker has to play."

United go into the game in fourth place and asked how he would feel if they finish below that this season Van Gaal said: 'It would be a big disappointment. When you start a season with that objective then you are occupied with that. But we are still there in the top four. I don't know why we are talking about this.

"We are still in the FA Cup. I am pleased with the results but not with a lot of the performances of my team.

"But always we are getting better despite all the injuries that we have suffered. Despite all the criticism of our defence we don't have many goals against us. We are not unhappy but we could have had better results.

"When you see our matches we are mostly the better team but the better team is not always winning."

Van Gaal believes all four teams and third-place Arsenal are involved in an almighty scrap for the final two Champions League places and that is why he thinks victory over Sunderland on Saturday is vital.

"It is because of the rat race between five clubs that we have to win, we have to be there," the United manager said.

"You have to win your matches because the other clubs are winning their matches."

Oldham 'would welcome Scholes'

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Thursday 26th February 2015 17:47

Paul Scholes: A massive Oldham fan

Paul Scholes: A massive Oldham fan

Stand-in boss Dean Holden insists he would not be surprised if Oldham managed to lure Paul Scholes into management.

Latics have a vacancy available at SportsDirect.com Park following Lee Johnson's decision to jump ship for League One rivals Barnsley on Wednesday.

Scholes, who grew up supporting Oldham and is a close friend of chairman Simon Corney, was immediately linked with the position but there is as yet little to suggest the 40-year-old is ready to swap his role as a television pundit to wade into the managerial world with a league club operating on one of the smallest budgets in the division.

Nevertheless, the idea of the former Manchester United midfielder holding the reins with Latics is not beyond the realms of possibility for Holden.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News at Oldham's press conference on Thursday morning, Holden said: "I wouldn't be surprised if Paul Scholes came in.

"I know he's a massive fan of Oldham and he's very friendly with the chairman Simon Corney too.

"He's a legend so I'll probably have my autograph book at the ready if he does arrive!"

Scholes, who only ever played for United during his playing career, retired for a second time in 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson also ended his long tenure at the Old Trafford helm.

The 66-cap England midfielder was a famously reserved figure who shunned the limelight during his time with the 20-time top-flight champions but has been seen across media outlets since first appearing on screens as a pundit last season.

Holden and club captain Adam Lockwood will take charge of Oldham against Preston this Saturday, with Latics announcing they will oversee first-team affairs "for the immediate future".

Nani: Has scored nine goals in 25 matches for Sporting this season

Portuguese winger Nani says he loves Manchester United and is open to the possibility of staying at the club when his season-long loan with Sporting Lisbon expires.

Nani rejoined Sporting until the end of the season as part of the deal that brought Argentine defender Marcos Rojo to Old Trafford last summer.

But the 28-year-old, who has scored four goals in six European appearances for Sporting this term, says he’s keen to stay at Old Trafford provided conditions are right.

"I love Manchester United," Nani told The Guardian.

"The only decision I made (last summer) was to play more and be me again, because I lost a lot of things there last season due to injuries and the change of manager.

"You never know the future. It depends on a lot of things. If United want me to stay then with a different mentality I think we can work well next season but there are a lot of things to discuss and see."

Nani broke down in tears after scoring a sensational volley in the 2-0 Portuguese Liga win against Gil Vicente last Sunday.

He said the goal had meant a lot to him for personal reasons, revealing Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward had sent him a congratulatory message after the strike.

"I receive some texts from Ed Woodward," Nani said. "He texted me about the goal and the great season I am having here."

Gary Neville expects Manchester United to stand by Louis van Gaal

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Wednesday 25th February 2015 8:29

Louis van Gaal: Under pressure

Louis van Gaal: Under pressure

Manchester United legend Gary Neville expects the club to stand by manager Louis van Gaal even if they miss out on Champions League qualification.

The Dutchman succeeded David Moyes as United's permanent manager in the summer and despite an uneven campaign, they have put themselves in position to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Neville believes they will complete the job - and that even if they miss out, sacking Van Gaal would be the wrong move.

"Absolutely not, he shouldn't be sacked," he told talkSPORT.

"It would be a terrible season for Man United and Louis van Gaal (if they do not finish in top four). He would probably say it was a big failure because he knows his job this season. He has to get in the Champions League.

"But on the other hand, if he didn't, you can't just sack a manager one year and then sack another manager the year after. Where do you go from there?

"There has to be a level of continuity. I absolutely believe this time there will be continuity and they will stand by him even if he doesn't finish in the top four - and that's the right thing to do."

United have most of their rivals for European qualification still to play before the season finishes and Neville added: "I still think Manchester United will finish in the top four. I think they will scrape in.

"There is a period in March where they have Arsenal in an FA Cup quarter-final, then they have Spurs the Sunday after and Liverpool after that. There is an international break and then they have got Aston Villa, Man City and Chelsea. I'd like to think these games will inspire some of the bigger players at Man United."

John van Zweden owns a 25 per cent stake in Swansea City

Swansea are discussing whether to discipline club director John van Zweden for allegedly calling Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal an "arrogant b******".

Van Zweden is reported to have made the remark to Dutch TV ahead of the Swans' 2-1 victory over United on Sunday.

In a statement issued by the club on Tuesday, chairman Huw Jenkins said he was "disappointed" a member of his board had put the club's relationship with others in jeopardy.

He said: "It is disappointing that one of our directors has apparently made a statement in the media in relation to a manager of another football club.

"Our football club prides itself on having a good working relationship with all Premier League clubs, managers and staff. We feel we have built up that good relationship over a number of years and will continue to work hard to preserve our image.

"If any of our directors behave in an inappropriate and unprofessional manner not befitting this football club then they will be dealt with internally and appropriately."

Van Zweden tweeted a number of times directly at van Gaal while celebrating the result, which confirmed Swansea's Premier League double over United this season.
