Radamel Falcao strike in Leicester win delights Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Saturday 31st January 2015 20:38

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said he was delighted to see Radamel Falcao get on the scoresheet in the 3-1 win over Leicester.

Falcao followed up Robin van Persie’s opener to score the hosts’ second, as they rattled in three first-half goals to kill off the game before the break.

That strike takes the Colombian’s tally up to four in the Premier League, and Van Gaal expressed his satisfaction at seeing both his strikers score.

"I am more happy that Falcao was scoring also because Robin has already scored enough goals," he told MUTV.

"Falcao needs that goal more than Robin. It is fantastic that they scored and beautiful goals also - very quick transition, the goal for Falcao, and Robin had a big part in it."

The reverse fixture will go down in Leicester folklore as the Foxes came from behind to take a stunning 5-3 win back in September, and Van Gaal was pleased to avenge that defeat.

"I am very pleased," he said. "We lost the away match and we have taken revenge of that and we have dominated the game, especially in the first half."

“In the second half I said ‘OK, you have to kill the game but also always continue to have your eyes open for a forward pass’.

“I think in that second half we played too much backwards but nevertheless we could have scored two or three goals more, but we didn’t do that then we conceded one – that’s a little bit disappointing because I thought we were the dominant team in the second half.”

Premier League: Leicester boss Nigel Pearson bemoans offside decision but takes positives from Man Utd defeat

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Saturday 31st January 2015 19:21

Nigel Pearson was disappointed that Robin van Persie's goal was allowed to stand in Manchester United's 3-1 win against Leicester

Van Persie appeared to stray offside as he latched on to Daley Blind’s pass for the opening goal at Old Trafford, but the flag stayed down as he fired Manchester United in front.

The hosts went on to score two more before the break, but Pearson’s side rallied to score in the second half and Pearson was encouraged by their display, despite his disappointment with the decision.

"I thought we did pretty well up until they scored the first goal, which was offside,” he said.

“We kept our discipline pretty well, but the bottom line is we didn’t manage the ball well enough when we won it back and so consequently we were spending long periods without the ball

“When you concede that much possession to a side like Manchester United then it’s going to make it difficult.

“Second half you could argue that they eased back a bit, or you could argue that we managed the ball better ourselves, and dealt with their threats a lot better.

“We certainly did a better job and gave ourselves more of a chance, so mixed feelings today but we’ll move on now.”

Results

The Foxes next host Crystal Palace in a game which Pearson knows they will need to get something from given they are currently three points from safety.

When asked if games like the one against the Eagles will be key, he said: “That is going to be the case. Days like today are bonus games for you, in some ways. That’s why we picked a pretty offensive line-up, but we didn’t really get into any sort of a rhythm and didn’t show the quality.

“It’s going to be important (from) here on in against the sides around us that we get better results.”

Pearson’s men have let in 38 goals in the Premier League this season, and the Leicester boss is hoping to finalise a deal to bring in Stoke defender Robert Huth on loan, but apart from that he doesn’t expect any more business to be done before the transfer deadline.

He said: “Hopefully that one will be across the line pretty soon, but apart from that there’s nothing else to discuss.”

Premier League: Manchester United climb back to third with 3-1 win over Leicester

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Saturday 31st January 2015 13:59

Manchester United climbed back into third place in the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Robin van Persie opened the scoring midway through the first half, latching on to Daley Blind's chipped pass to fire past Mark Schwarzer.

There was a suspicion of offside as the striker darted beyond the defence, but referee Martin Atkinson denied Leicester's appeals.

Moments later it was 2-0 as Van Persie sparked a quick counter-attack. The Dutchman's pass released Angel Di Maria down the left and, despite Schwarzer saving the winger's low drive, Radamel Falcao was on hand to slide home the rebound for his fourth United goal.

Louis van Gaal's side were bursting with confidence and a minute before half-time they made it 3-0. Wayne Rooney's whipped corner was flicked on by Blind and the unfortunate Wes Morgan diverted the ball into his own net for the second time this season.

Leicester offered little threat in the first half but pulled a goal back with 10 minutes of the match remaining through defender Marcin Wasilewski.

After the visitors' set-piece appeared to break down, second-half substitutes Esteban Cambiasso and Marc Albrighton combined down the right and the former Aston Villa winger crossed for Wasilewski to head past David de Gea.

Albrighton volleyed a dipping drive narrowly over the bar a minute later before Di Maria raced up the other end and blasted his shot high above the Leicester goal.

It was a difficult afternoon for new Leicester signing Andrej Kramaric on his full debut, with the striker losing the ball for Blind to find Van Persie in the build-up to United’s opening goal.

The Croatia striker was replaced by David Nugent in the second half and the substitute tested De Gea from a tight angle after racing clear of the United defence.

The hosts looked to extend their lead in the closing stages but James Wilson, who had been sent on for Falcao, saw his shot saved by Schwarzer before Blind scooped the ball into the goalkeeper’s hands from the resulting corner.

United’s victory leaves them three points above fifth-placed Tottenham, while Leicester remain three points from safety at the bottom of the table.

Premier League: Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal annoyed by Ander Herrera questions

Louis van Gaal: Gets shirty after Ander Herrera's future is questioned

Louis van Gaal: Gets shirty after Ander Herrera's future is questioned

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has reacted angrily to questions over the future of midfielder Ander Herrera.

United paid £29m to bring Herrera to Old Trafford from Athletic Bilbao in the summer and he has scored three goals in 14 appearances for the club.

However, the 25-year-old has not started a game since December 2, leading to speculation about his standing at the club.

But Van Gaal was not impressed with that line of questioning, criticising the media’s insistence on focusing on players who are not in the team.

“You are always asking about the player who is not playing,” he said.

“Three weeks ago it was (Radamel) Falcao. Next week it will be about another player who is not playing. It is unbelievable.

“I can only line up 11 players.”

When Herrera’s £29m price tag was mentioned, Van Gaal insisted that should not be an issue in whether he plays or not.

“It is not so interesting that you talk about the pounds (fee paid),” he added.

“Paddy McNair is also important and he cost nothing, so I do not agree.

“I am not discussing this (the omission of Herrera) with you.”

Kevin Strootman blow for Roma as midfielder reveals he will be out for longer than first expected

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Friday 30th January 2015 16:48

Roma's Kevin Strootman will be out for longer than expected after knee surgery on Friday revealed further injury problems.

The 24-year-old underwent surgery to deal with Cyclops Syndrome, a condition which can cause pain and swelling and is associated with individuals who have undergone cruciate ligament surgery - as Strootman did last March before spending nine months out.

Roma had said on Thursday they hoped to have the Dutch international back in action within a month, but he wrote on Twitter that he will now be out for longer due to complications with the surgery.

"The scar tissue from my previous operation has been removed successfully today," he wrote. "Unfortunately some cartilaginous damage, caused by the knock in the Fiorentina match, was found too.

"This means I have to take a longer rest period than anticipated earlier and I am extremely disappointed that it will take much longer before I can be back on the pitch again."

Strootman, a reported transfer target for Manchester United, has been limited to just six league appearances this season.

Transfer news: Manchester United sign Salford defender Sadiq El Fitouri

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Friday 30th January 2015 15:26

Manchester United have signed right-back Sadiq El Fitouri from Northern Premier League side Salford City on an 18-month contract.

El Fitouri came through the youth ranks at Manchester City before being released by United’s rivals and will now link up with Warren Joyce's U21 squad.

Gary and Phil Neville, along with former United team-mates Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, each own 10 per cent of the club and brought El Fitouri to the attention of the Reds, who impressed following a week's trial with United.

“Incredible story on Sadiq El Fitouri. Well done to Phil and Scholesy for showing belief in a lad who was out of the game!,” tweeted Gary Neville.

"Phil and Scholesy gave him his Salford City debut just three weeks ago and the boy has signed for United. #dreamscometrue"

Libyan-born El Fitouri, whose brother plays for Burnley, is delighted to sign for United.

"This is honestly a dream come true for me and I have to thank Salford City for the chance, as well as the faith they have shown in me," he told the club’s official website.

"I am really looking forward to what happens next and to be given the opportunity to do so at Manchester United is unbelievable."

Premier League: Nigel Pearson insists his players must forget about their win against Manchester United

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Thursday 29th January 2015 23:28

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson admits he has been trying to make his team forget about their Manchester United heroics ever since they beat them 5-3.

Their incredible win against Louis van Gaal's side in September was their standout victory of the Barclays Premier League season - but it sparked a 13-game winless streak.

Leicester have failed to lift themselves off the bottom of the table after the run, despite winning two and drawing one of their last four league games.

The Foxes face a rematch with United when they go to Old Trafford on Saturday and Pearson insists they must ignore the past and focus on the present.

"We've been trying to forget about it ever since,” Pearce said. “It was great but until we beat Hull (in December) that was the last time we won.

"I think the best thing for us to do is concentrate on what we are doing at the moment. I don't know if it has affected anything. It obviously has as the question has been asked.

"I don't spend much time looking at those angles. The game at our place was a very good result for us, we had a very good second half and scored at vital times.

"But those are not the sort of events that happen every week."

Van Gaal admitted United looked unbalanced during their defeat at the King Power Stadium, where they played a diamond, and fans have called for him to shelve his preferred 3-5-2 formation and switch to 4-4-2.

Pearson has sympathy for the Dutchman and insisted van Gaal's United overhaul will take time.

"I've never been in any doubt their manager will play the way he wants to," Pearson said.

"But it may be a situation where he gets all his players in before the way he totally wants to play. That happens with everyone, it happened with us.

"But his track record as a manager is outstanding and he's proved many times over the years he is capable of building sides. Over the initial building period there is rebuilding to do.

"I can only speak from my own experience but you have to get enough results while you're going through the building process to keep people on side or keep your job."

Transfer news: Juan Cuadrado may have choice of Chelsea or Manchester Uniited

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Juan Cuadrado: Facing a potentially tough choice

Juan Cuadrado: Facing a potentially tough choice

Fiorentina attacking midfielder Juan Cuadrado faces a difficult choice between Manchester United and Chelsea should he decide to move to the Premier League, according to Tony Cascarino and Paul Walsh.

Cuadrado is reportedly interesting both clubs with Fiorentina thought unwilling to sell the Colombian for less than the €35m buy-out fee stipulated in his contract.

Former Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City forward Walsh believes the lure of playing at Old Trafford could prove too much for the explosive winger to resist.

“They’re two great clubs but the history and success of Manchester United you’d have to be tempted,” Walsh told The Morning View on Sky Sports News HQ.

“You’d like to think that if you sign for them at the moment and they qualify for the Champions League that they would be back on their way up.

“Anything can happen if you’re in all the big competitions so next season could be massively exciting. When Manchester United are at the top of the league there is not a better club in the world. They are up there with Real Madrid.”

'Attraction'

But former Chelsea and Marseille striker Cascarino believes the attraction of playing in London is a powerful one and Cuadrado could be tempted by a lucrative offer from Jose Mourinho’s side.

“It’s all about past history with Manchester United,” Cascarino said. “They’ve not won so much in recent years with the end of the Fergie era.

“Chelsea you feel are the club that are going to be very close to winning this year and there’s also the financial side.

“Playing abroad, I found that many players want to come to London, not only because it is easy to come in and out of, but there’s also a financial aspect.

“Many players who have played for London clubs have earned fortunes on their properties. Manchester at the moment does not offer that.

“Now for me, that would be the wrong reason because all I’d want to do is go and play football, but it does play a part in the minds of some footballers.”

Walsh added: “If you’re signing based on the team today then you’d possibly choose Chelsea. London and the Jose factor at Chelsea would also be a big draw.

“Don’t get me wrong there is not a lot in it and you could discuss the merits of both clubs, but I think you’d do well to turn Manchester United down.”
