Radamel Falcao: On the move?

Radamel Falcao: On the move?

Monaco striker Radamel Falcao has been the subject of frenzied speculation as the summer transfer window enters its final day.

The last 24 hours have seen the Columbia forward linked with a host of Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United as well as European champions Real Madrid.

Arsene Wenger said Arsenal are in "very active" talks with a striker following his side’s 1-1 draw with Leicester – any deal for Falcao looks likely to include a £20m loan fee.

“We want to and we are open to it,” Wenger said. "I don't want to speak about individual cases. We are very active.”

Falcao tweeted "Hello Madrid" on Sunday – only to delete it not long afterwards – while reports in Italy claim United are keen to sign him.

And City’s interest could be strengthening with Alvaro Negredo looking set to join Valencia on loan.

Premier League: Darren Fletcher remains calm over Manchester United start

Darren Fletcher: Manchester United midfielder challenges Burnley's Scott Arfield

Darren Fletcher: Manchester United midfielder challenges Burnley's Scott Arfield

Darren Fletcher is refusing to panic despite Manchester United's poor start to the season under Louis van Gaal.

United's new manager stretched his winless streak to four matches on Saturday with a 0-0 draw at Burnley.

Midfielder Fletcher admits it has been a challenge to get to grips with the new 3-4-1-2 system implemented by van Gaal, but the Scot is sure everything will click into place eventually.

"It's mentally challenging but that has always been the case," the United vice-captain said when asked about the difficulties of adapting to a new formation.

"The players are learning a new system and developing ideas. It is going to make us better players in the long term.

"These things take time and we just have to keep believing in the manager's philosophy and ideas.

"There are other things that come into it, it's not just the system, but I am confident we will put things right."

United have spent upwards of £130million on four new players this summer and more deals are expected before the transfer window closes on Monday evening.

Fletcher believes the Dutchman has every right to make big changes given the club's seventh-place finish last term, and their performances so far this year.

"The manager was very straight and forward with the players and I think the players appreciated that," Fletcher said.

"You expect that after a disappointing season like last season."

Transfer news: Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez set for Real Madrid loan

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Sunday 31st August 2014 17:35

Javier Hernandez: Set for Real Madrid loan, says Guillem Balague

Javier Hernandez: Set for Real Madrid loan, says Guillem Balague

Manchester United and Real Madrid have agreed a season-long loan deal for striker Javier Hernandez which is expected to be completed on Monday, according to Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

The Mexico international has grown increasingly frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities at Old Trafford and has been linked with several clubs during the transfer window, including Valencia and Juventus.

Real Madrid have been linked with former Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao throughout the summer, but his club, Monaco, are thought to be holding out for a hefty loan fee for their prized asset.

Falcao's compatriot James Rodriguez has already moved to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer but Real appear to have turned their attention to 'Chicharito' to boost their striking options.

Speaking ahead of Villarreal's match against Barcelona, Balague said: "Manchester United and Real Madrid have agreed a one-year loan deal for Chicharito Hernandez to be a player of Real Madrid.

"Some may say that is surprising because they have lost a midfielder in Xabi Alonso, but they also lost (Alvaro) Morata and Ancelotti decided if they were going to get anybody it will be a Number 9.

"That's it, Real Madrid have got another striker."

Hernandez joined Manchester United from FC Guadalajara four years ago and has scored 59 goals in 154 appearances.

The 26-year-old's anticipated departure is the clearest indication that Danny Welbeck's future lies at Old Trafford following reports linking him with a move away from Manchester United this summer.

Liverpool make use of little possession

http://ift.tt/W0EWuV

Liverpool: Won convincingly at Tottenham

Liverpool: Won convincingly at Tottenham

Lacklustre Manchester United, brilliant Diego Costa and Liverpool's good use of little possession feature in our review of the weekend's stats.

We look at the stats from a Premier League weekend which saw Chelsea and Swansea City maintain the only remaining 100% records as Manchester City suffered a shock home defeat to Stoke City before Tottenham were convincingly beaten 3-0 by Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

At the other end, QPR claimed their first win of the season and were replaced at the bottom by Burnley, who at least got off the mark with a credible 0-0 draw against Manchester United.

Burnley 0 Manchester United 0

Burnley had never drawn a Premier League game 0-0 before Saturday (this was their 41st game)

Burnley have kept only four clean sheets in the Premier League, but two of them have come against Manchester United.

This ended a run of 29 Premier League games without a clean sheet for Burnley.

Manchester United have gone four Premier League away games without a win for the first time since October 2010.

Two points from three games is United's worst start since 2007-08 (also two points from three games).

Six of Manchester United's seven shots in this game came in the second half.

Only Arsenal (twice) have restricted United to fewer shots in a Premier League game since the start of last season than Burnley managed.

Scott Arfield created two goalscoring chances, more than any United player in this game.

United have won only nine of their 22 Premier League games in 2014.

Manchester City 0 Stoke City 1

Stoke City scored at the Etihad in the Premier League for the first time.

Mame Biram Diouf scored in the Premier League for the first time since December 2010; there were 1,341 days between his two strikes.

This was only the second time in their last 71 Premier League home games that Manchester City have failed to score (0-1 v Chelsea in Feb 2014).

Manchester City had scored at least two goals in each of their last 10 Premier League games before failing to net in this one.

Stoke had played 12 Premier League games in Manchester (City & United combined) and lost all 12 before their shock victory.

Stoke kept a clean sheet in a Premier League away game for the first time since last December (at Hull City).

The last three away managers to keep a clean sheet at the Etihad are Mark Hughes, Jose Mourinho and Alex McLeish.

Both Manchester clubs failed to score in the league on the same day (when both played) for the first time since 10/11/10, when a Manchester derby ended 0-0. Before that, the last time they both played and failed to score was 13/12/08.

Newcastle 3 Crystal Palace 3

Crystal Palace scored the earliest first-half goal (Gayle), the earliest second-half goal (Puncheon) and the latest (Zaha) goal of the 2014-15 Premier League season so far.

Indeed Dwight Gayle's strike was the first goal scored in the opening minute in the top-flight this term.

Gayle has now scored eight goals in his last six games in all competitions, including four in his last two.

Daryl Janmaat is the third player from Netherlands to score for Newcastle in the Premier League, after Patrick Kluivert and Vurnon Anita.

Rolando Aarons became the second youngest player to score in the Premier League for the Magpies, after James Milner (both 18).

Rolando Aarons is alphabetically the first name of any player to score in Premier League history, displacing Gary Ablett.

Crystal Palace have conceded two or more goals in each of their last six Premier League matches.

Mike Williamson scored his first Premier League goal in his 106th appearance in the competition.

There has been a goal in second-half stoppage time in each of the last three meetings between these sides at St James Park.

Wilfried Zaha scored his first competitive goal since the 2012-13 play-off semi-final, when he scored twice for the Eagles against Brighton.

Queens Park Rangers 1 Sunderland 0

Charlie Austin scored QPR's first Premier League goal of the season, meaning the R's became the 20th and final team to net this term.

Austin has scored nine goals in his last nine league games at Loftus Road (including play-offs).

Sunderland have only kept one clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League away games.

Harry Redknapp picked up only his third home win in 15 Premier League games at Loftus Road as QPR manager (D5 L7).

QPR won a Premier League game while also keeping a clean sheet for the first time since a 1-0 win over Chelsea in January 2013.

QPR have scored 38 goals in 40 Premier League home games since August 2011.

Swansea City 3 West Bromwich Albion 0

Gylfi Sigurdsson was involved in Swansea's first four Premier League goals this season (one goal, three assists) and has either scored (one) or assisted (four) five of their six overall.

Indeed in three games this season, the Icelandic midfielder has already equalled his assist tally in 58 Premier League games for Tottenham Hotspur (four).

Wayne Routledge has scored more goals against the Baggies than any other Premier League side (three).

After scoring his first ever Premier League goal for Swansea at Villa Park, Routledge's last eight in the top-flight have come at Liberty Stadium.

The Swans have already claimed 21% of their entire points total from last season (9 of 42) in only three games.

Nathan Dyer has now been involved in more PL goals than any other Swansea player (25, 17 goals and eight assists).

Swansea have won five of their seven previous Premier League clashes with the Baggies (L2).

West Brom have failed to score in their last four Premier League away games (L3 D1).

West Ham United 1 Southampton 3

Mark Noble has now scored a Premier League goal in each of the last eight seasons that West Ham United have played in the top flight.

Indeed no player has scored in more Premier League seasons for West Ham than Noble (eight, level with Carlton Cole).

Mauro Zarate has scored one and assisted two in his last three Premier League appearances (includes one game for Birmingham)

Morgan Schneiderlin equalled his season tally for 2013-14 with his brace in this game.

None of West Ham's last 18 Premier League games have ended level (W8 L10).

Southampton won a Premier League away game having conceded the first goal for the first time since September 1994 against Coventry.

It was also their first top-flight away win from behind since New Year's Day 2002, when they won at Chelsea.

Everton 3 Chelsea 6

Chelsea are the first away team to score 6+ goals at Goodison in the PL since Arsenal won 6-1 on the opening day of 2009-10.

Diego Costa is the first Chelsea player to score in his opening three league games since Adrian Mutu.

The last player to score four goals in his first three Premier League games was Michu for Swansea.

Fernando Torres took 39 games to score four Premier League goals for Chelsea, Costa just three.

This match saw five goals being scored in 10 minutes and 34 seconds, between Chelsea's third and Chelsea's fifth.

Samuel Eto'o scored his 10th Premier League goal but the first not scored at Stamford Bridge.

Ramires assisted two goals and scored against Everton; he scored one and assisted two in 30 PL appearances last season.

Steven Naismith has now scored in all three of Everton's Premier League games this season.

Everton have scored the highest number of own goals in Premier League history (44).

Everton have scored a 45th minute goal in all three of their Premier League games this season.

Cesc Fabregas has assisted a goal in each of his last five appearances in the Premier League.

Tim Howard made his 300th PL appearance for Everton; only Leon Osman (323) & David Unsworth (302) have more.

Aston Villa 2 Hull City 1

Andreas Weimann has scored three goals in his last two matches against Hull.

The Austrian has also been involved in all three of Aston Villa's goals this season (scored two, one assist).

Hull have now scored in their last two games against Villa, having failed to find the net in any of their previous eight in all competitions.

Michael Dawson made 16 clearances - more than any other Hull player in a single match this season.

Brad Guzan became the eighth Aston Villa to be booked this season - more than any other Premier League team.

Nikica Jelavic scored in back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since October 2012.

Hull equalled their record from May to September 2009 of scoring in five successive Premier League away games.

Seven of Hull's nine attempts at goal came in the second half.

Tottenham Hotspur 0 Liverpool 3

After losing five consecutive Premier League away fixtures against Tottenham, Liverpool have won their last two (eight goals scored, none conceded).

Liverpool scored their 10th Premier League penalty against Tottenham. This took them clear of Manchester City against Aston Villa as the team with most penalties against a single opponent.

Javier Manquillo recorded six of Liverpool's 14 interceptions in this game

Etienne Capoue has attempted the most passes in the Premier League this season (301).

Liverpool against Spurs drew level with Liverpool against Newcastle as the Premier League fixture to contain the most goals (129).

Spurs produced one shot on target in this match - the only game in which they managed fewer than two last season was in the 5-0 home defeat against Liverpool.

Liverpool had 39.5% of possession; the only game in which they had less last season was in the 4-0 home win against Everton (39.1%).

Leicester City 1 Arsenal 1

Leicester have scored in all of their last 17 home league games.

Alexis Sánchez became the 100th different player to score a Premier League goal for Arsenal (not including own goals).

Nine Arsenal players attempted more passes in this game than the Leicester player with the most (Paul Konchesky, 39).

Aaron Ramsey (116) attempted the second most passes in a Premier League game this season, after Etienne Capoue's 123 against QPR.

Arsenal have only won three of their last 10 Premier League away games (D3 L4).

Leicester players produced 13 blocks in this game, Arsenal players produced just two.

No team managed to block more than 13 opposition shots in a Premier League match last season (it happened twice, both by West Ham).

Arsenal have recorded two of the three largest match possession shares this season (76% against Crystal Palace and 69% against Leicester).

Shinji Kagawa: Failed to impress Louis van Gaal

Shinji Kagawa: Failed to impress Louis van Gaal

Shinji Kagawa has rejoined Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal.

The 25-year-old Japan international midfielder leaves Manchester United having failed to impress new manager Louis van Gaal.

Kagawa moved to Old Trafford in the summer of 2012 having spent two years in Germany where he collected back-to-back Bundesliga titles with Dortmund.

He also picked up a Premier League winners' medal at Old Trafford during Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season.

However, his only appearance for United this season was a 20-minute spell during their shambolic 4-0 Capita One Cup defeat to Milton Keynes Dons earlier this week.

Kagawa made 57 appearances for United, scoring six goals that included a hat-trick against Norwich.

According to Dortmund's official website, he said: "I wanted to realise my Premier League dream but now I'm happy to be back in Dortmund.

"This great team, a unique environment and Dortmund is like a family.

"I am proud they have never forgotten me and I can belong again."

Despite rumours linking Rene Meulensteen with a return to Manchester United, Sky sources understand the Dutchman will not be heading to Old Trafford to take up a role under his compatriot Louis van Gaal.

Stories had emerged this week that the 50-year-old could be heading back to the club for a third time but this appears not to be the case.

Meulensteen first joined United in 2001 to work with the youth team before leaving five years later to become manager of Danish side Brondby.

He returned to Manchester to become Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant for six seasons before departing in the summer of 2013 following the appointment of David Moyes as manager.

Last season he spent around two months as manager of Fulham before being sacked by the-then Premier League club in February.

On Monday he joins presenter Jim White on transfer deadline day with Sky Sports News.

Angel di Maria: Showed promise, but United continue to struggle

Angel di Maria: Showed promise, but United continue to struggle

Louis van Gaal's restoration of Man United may take longer than expected despite the promising debut of Angel di Maria, writes Matt Stanger.

The last time Manchester United travelled to Burnley in August 2009, the hosts inflicted a memorable upset on the reigning champions, gaining a 1-0 victory thanks to Robbie Blake's stunning strike.

It was one of the Premier League's greatest giant-killing acts and a result that ultimately proved crucial for United as they missed out on the title to Chelsea by a single point.

On Saturday lunchtime there would not have been the same feeling of shock had Burnley broken the deadlock. United's laboured performances are becoming increasingly familiar, with Louis van Gaal's vision for the team remaining in limbo. Despite the efforts of new signing Angel di Maria, the visitors toiled to a 0-0 draw at the same ground where Chelsea laid down a marker two weeks ago. It was only Burnley's fourth clean sheet in 41 Premier League matches - two of which have come against United - and rarely did it look like their backline would be breached.

United, on the other hand, frequently found their patchwork defence under threat. Jonny Evans continued where he left off in a shambolic display against MK Dons, gifting Lukas Jutkiewicz an early chance with a weak back-pass to David de Gea. Ashley Young again looked uncomfortable at left wing-back while Scott Arfield exposed Tyler Blackett's inexperience when he turned the defender inside the box in the second half. Van Gaal must fear the ease with which one of the division's heavyweights could cut through his struggling side.

Ashley Young: Not in his natural position when playing at wing back

It was supposed to be an easy start to the season, with United first facing an opponent who finished in last year's top ten on 5th October, when Everton visit Old Trafford. But thus far they have taken just two points as the players contend with the manager's new system. It will clearly require a great deal of time and patience for United to meet the requirements of playing a three-man defence, but that is time the club cannot afford as they bid to return to the UEFA Champions League.

Van Gaal remains confident of getting his message across, and he warned journalists on Friday that slow starts at Barcelona and Bayern Munich proved deceiving. He won the title in his first season at both clubs, but it will take a drastic change in fortunes to see those feats repeated in the current campaign. United's priority is still to regain their place in the top four, but, on the evidence of Saturday's performance, they are a long way from achieving that aim.

"They will play with a lot of passion, a lot of long balls," said Van Gaal before the game, but given the manner in which his team approached the match, it is difficult to tell whether he was talking about Burnley or United. The visitors were quick to look long, often bypassing a midfield which featured two record-breaking signings that have arrived in the last eight months. While Di Maria's performance offered promise, Juan Mata was again a point of frustration.

Juan Mata's role in the team continues to be debated

There are mitigating factors for United's predicament, specifically a mounting injury list and the delay over Marcos Rojo's work permit, but the biggest concern is how quickly the squad can adapt to playing with a back three. Van Gaal has admitted that a number of players could leave before Monday's transfer deadline, so it seems strange that he is persisting with the current formation when the team could look very different after the international break.

It is even more peculiar when you consider that he has shown a preference for 4-3-3 throughout his career, only altering the Netherlands' setup for the World Cup following Kevin Strootman's knee injury. "You have to play as a team and not as individuals," said Van Gaal before Strootman was ruled out. "That's why I'm always going back to the vision, then the team, and then which players fit in my system, a 1-4-3-3, because I'm always playing that."

Van Gaal has now adopted a different approach, but at the moment the players he has available cannot satisfy the demands of the system. Young and Antonio Valencia remain wingers rather than wing-backs, while Darren Fletcher's powers have unsurprisingly been diminished by illness. It was Di Maria who had to drop deep to collect the ball off the centre-backs in the first half, and his driving runs through midfield were United's only hope of mounting an attack without Blackett or Evans launching the ball long to Rooney.

Daley Blind could improve United if the Dutch international arrives

The state of the United team is reminiscent of a cadavre exquis, with each of the club's last three managers responsible for contributing a different part of the whole. Sir Alex Ferguson signed Van Persie to partner Rooney before realising they lack the natural chemistry to play as a pair, while David Moyes recruited Mata to build a bond between midfield and attack. Van Gaal is now left to knit the separate limbs together and bolster a defence that lacks protection and has not developed at the rate initially forecast. Daley Blind's arrival should be the start, while Rojo, Rafael and Luke Shaw are yet to feature.

"We will have to see where we are in a month or so," said Van Gaal after another disappointing result. "Di Maria did not look like the world-class player we have seen either, but you cannot expect that straightaway. He has to adapt to a new league, and the team needs time to adapt to his style of playing."

It is not what supporters will want to hear after four games without a win, but their patience will be tested longer than they might have expected.

Premier League: Manchester United held 0-0 by Burnley at Turf Moor

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Manchester United's Angel Di Maria in action during the Barclays Premier League match at Turf Moor, Burnley.

Manchester United's Angel Di Maria in action during the Barclays Premier League match at Turf Moor, Burnley.

Louis van Gaal continues to wait for his first win as Manchester United manager following a lacklustre 0-0 draw away to promoted Burnley.

United included record signing Angel di Maria in their starting line-up, but rarely looked like scoring at Turf Moor as Burnley picked up a first point since returning to the top flight.

Former United youngster David Jones almost gave Burnley a third-minute lead when the midfielder curled a 25-yard free-kick against the crossbar, with David de Gea rooted to the spot.

Another ex-Red Devil then kept the scores level as Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton produced a fine reaction stop on 15 minutes to keep out Robin van Persie’s well-struck shot.

New boy Di Maria was one of the few bright sparks for United on his debut as chances were at a premium before Van Persie saw a second-half effort blocked on the line by Dean Marney.

Di Maria was replaced with 20 minutes to go after seemingly suffering from cramp and Wayne Rooney headed wide at the far post from a corner.

United appealed for a penalty late on when a shot from Ashley Young, who also appealed in vain for a spot-kick in the first half, clattered into Ashley Barnes, but Van Gaal’s side had never looked like getting their season up and running following previous setbacks against Swansea and Sunderland.

Transfer news: Borussia Dortmund would welcome Shinji Kagawa back

Shinji Kagawa: Tipped to return to Dortmund

Shinji Kagawa: Tipped to return to Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Kehl says Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa would be welcomed back to the German club with open arms.

Japan international Kagawa has been linked with a return to the Westphalians, with whom he won the Bundesliga in 2011 and 2012, and Kehl reckons he would be a more than welcome addition to the squad.

At the same time, the former Dortmund captain warned his club's fans not to expect the 25-year-old to make an immediate impact.

"Of course we've heard the latest speculation - we don't live on the moon - but we were focusing on the game (against Augsburg)," Kehl said after Friday night's 3-2 Bundesliga victory.

"Shinji was a very important factor in our side's successes in 2011 and 2012. He delivered some fantastic performances in Dortmund, but unfortunately he's not had such an easy time in Manchester.

"He's not been playing much and in particular his self-confidence is not going to be bubbling.

"If he were to join us, then he would need to be built back up again, and he would find the surroundings here where he would be welcomed wholeheartedly, both from the fans and from the team.

"He would get all the support he would need to be able to deliver his best performances again."

Kagawa arrived at Dortmund in 2010 in a deal worth 350,000 euros, moving on to United two years later for a fee believed to be in the region of 15million euros.
