Anders Lindegaard says Ryan Giggs could be the new Pep Guardiola

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Tuesday 29th April 2014 8:18

Anders Lindegaard has backed Ryan Giggs to become permanent Manchester United manager and claimed the Welshman could be the next Pep Guardiola.

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal is the front runner to succeed David Moyes as United manager but Lindegaard has compared Giggs not only to Bayern Munich boss Guardiola, the former Barcelona coach, but also to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Giggs has already won the backing of the likes of Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand and now Danish goalkeeper Lindegaard feels the all-time United record appearance holder could step up to the manager role full-time.

Lindegaard, who was on the bench for Giggs' first game in charge in the 4-0 win over Norwich, was impressed by the Welshman and feels he has learnt things from former United boss Ferguson.

"It might sound pretty rash and naive, but, in my opinion, we are dealing with a new Guardiola," Lindegaard wrote in his column for Betfair.com.dk.

"What we have seen in the first week has been more than convincing.

"The similarities with Sir Alex Ferguson are striking and it is evident that Ryan Giggs has learned from one of history's most respected football managers.

"Some would question whether you can go from being a team-mate one day to a manager the next. Normally I would have reservations as well, but, in the case of Giggs, it is different.

"His latest speech, before the team went onto the pitch for the Norwich game, made my hairs stand on end in a way that I have only ever experienced from Sir Alex Ferguson: Do not disappoint the fans!"

Giggs' chances look remote even though sources close to the club insist Van Gaal is only one of several names on a shortlist.

Those names include Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, but it is understood United chiefs are determined to appoint a coach with a significant level of managerial experience at the very top of European football and that rules out Giggs.

Despite van Gaal being the overwhelming favourite to be named as United's new manager Sky Sports sources understands Manchester United are considering other candidates to be their new manager, despite positive talks with the Dutchman.

Van Gaal will be Netherlands boss at this summer's World Cup, but will then step down and he is thought to have held initial talks with United officials.

Other names in the frame include Real Madrid chief Carlo Ancelotti, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone and Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp.

Meanwhile, former United defender Gary Neville has revealed he would like United to appoint a British boss and hopes Giggs is given more of a chance to impress in the role.

"I would have liked to have seen Ryan have two or three games," Neville told Monday Night Football.

"He started well on Saturday, so let him have two or three more games to see whether he settles into the position and whether he can bed in and be given that role.

"At the end of the day the owners will do what they want to do. I suppose in some ways they want an experienced hand, but I personally would like to see a British manager be appointed because Manchester United have always appointed British managers."

Gary Neville: No certainty in appointing Louis van Gaal or Ryan Giggs

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Monday 28th April 2014 23:28

Gary Neville would like to see Manchester United continue their tradition of appointing British managers - and wants Ryan Giggs to be given a chance.

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has emerged as the favourite for the job and the club confirmed on Monday they have held positive talks with him, but are continuing to keep their options open.

However, Neville says that the appointment of a 62-year-old who has never worked in the Premier League carries an element of risk and backed former team-mate Giggs to be considered after he guided the team to a 4-0 win over Norwich on Saturday.

"He's an experienced hand. He's won trophies in different countries and managed the biggest clubs in Europe," he told Monday Night Football.

"He's the favourite at the moment and we know nowadays, just through the weight of media speculation, sometimes, where jobs are going to go. I think at the moment it's pushing towards him.

"I would have liked to have seen Ryan have two or three games. He started well on Saturday, so let him have two or three more games to see whether he settles into the position and whether he can bed in and be given that role.

"I don't think there's any certainty wherever you go. There's the idea that Ryan hasn't got experience but he knows the club and there's the idea that Van Gaal has massive experience, but doesn't know the Premier League.

"At the end of the day the owners will do what they want to do. I suppose in some ways they want an experienced hand, but I personally would like to see a British manager be appointed because Manchester United have always appointed British managers.

"We'll wait and see."

Rule

Neville is concerned that Van Gaal might not be able to oversee an effective recruitment policy this summer because he will be taking charge of the Netherlands at the World Cup in Brazil.

And even though Giggs has no coaching experience, he highlighted managers such as Diego Simeone and Pep Guardiola who have stepped into the hot seat at big Spanish clubs and won titles.

Neville said: "There's no hard and fast rule in appointing managers nowadays. You see some managers go in who have little experience - Diego Simeone, Pep Guardiola or Kenny Dalglish all those years ago.

"Then there's the idea of managers who have one or two good seasons like Jose Mourinho. It worked for Chelsea and then Andre Villas-Boas didn't.

"You've seen different examples of how sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work. There is no hard and fast rule and until you appoint someone you haven't got a clue whether it's going to work or not.

"From that point of view, people say Ryan's got no experience but then is Van Gaal going to work? We don't know.

"It's a call for people at the club."

Premier League: Manchester United's options open on new manager

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Monday 28th April 2014 16:32

Manchester United are considering other candidates to be their new manager, despite positive talks with Louis van Gaal, according to Sky sources.

Van Gaal remains the bookies' favourite to replace David Moyes, who was sacked last week.

Ryan Giggs has been put in charge until the end of the season, and United hammered Norwich 4-0 in his first match on Saturday.

Van Gaal will be Netherlands boss at this summer's World Cup, but will then step down. He had been linked with Tottenham but it is understood he has held talks with United, and that they went well.

United though are keeping their options open with other candidates still in the frame.

It has not been confirmed who they are, but the likes of Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone - who has guided his team to the brink of La Liga title and the semi-finals of the Champions League - Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp and even Giggs himself could be in the frame.

Moyes was sacked after a disappointing season in which United lost 11 matches and failed to qualify for next season's Champions League.

They did reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League where they were knocked out by Bayern Munich, and there was no joy in the domestic cups either.

Moyes - recruited from Everton last summer - paid the price, with the owners losing patience with the perceived lack of progress.

The new manager - whoever he is - is likely to have a transfer fund of over £100m to spend to strengthen the squad in the summer.

And Giggs is confident that United will be challenging for the Premier League title again next season.

He said: "We've got everything in place to have a successful season next year. We've certainly got the players.

"It's going to be hard, obviously, because we've had a tough season and obviously the lads at Liverpool have improved and other teams around us have improved.

"It won't be easy, but I'm confident."

He added on claims that United are now a side in decline: "We won the league last year. The year before we lost it on goal difference, the year before that we won it.

"Where did Liverpool come last year, seventh? Who would have said they would be where they are this year, so a lot can change."

Premier League: Luke Shaw happy to stay at Southampton

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Sunday 27th April 2014 21:50

Luke Shaw says he is happy to stay at Southampton next season, despite reports linking him with Manchester United and the club he supported as a boy, Chelsea.

The left-back has had a superb season for Saints, making his England debut and challenging Ashley Cole for a place in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad at the age of just 18.

He was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year on Sunday evening, along with skipper Adam Lallana.

And his stellar performances up and down the left flank have seen him linked with a big money move to either Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge.

But Shaw told Sky Sports News that whilst he is flattered by the stories, he is more than happy to continue his football education on the south coast.

"It's a good thing to be linked with them, but I don't concentrate with that stuff. I've got football to focus on. That's my only thinking," he said.

"(Southampton) is a great club, I'm still young and I've got plenty to learn. It's all rumours. I'm just focusing on the two games I've got left and then see what happens."

Shaw admits he is still pinching himself, not just about playing for England, but simply becoming a regular in the Premier League.

"It's been unbelievable," he said. "For me to be 18 and to have played 30-odd games in the Premier League is something I wouldn't have even dreamed of when I was younger. And England was probably the best feeling of my life. So I'm going to keep pushing myself to become a better player."

Shaw, Lallana and strikers Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez all earned call-ups to the England squad this season.

He is the latest off the famed Southampton production belt of young talent, following the likes of Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. And Shaw says Saints fans can expect many more talented players to emerge in the next few years.

"It's not just the ones that have come through - there's plenty more to come," he said. "I've seen around the training ground, you can see the qualities they have. Southampton's a great club for youngsters - obviously myself, Callum Chambers, James Ward-Prowse....hopefully it can carry on in the future."

Premier League: Juan Mata says Ryan Giggs has what it takes to manage Manchester United

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Sunday 27th April 2014 14:37

Juan Mata feels Ryan Giggs is the perfect man to lead Manchester United after getting off to a winning start against Norwich.

Giggs' reign as United manager got off to the best start possible on Saturday as the Red Devils strolled to a 4-0 win over Norwich at Old Trafford.

After a slightly cumbersome first half United sprang into life after the break, playing with width, pace and flair - just as Giggs had demanded.

Giggs may not be under consideration for the post on a full-time basis, but many of the 75,208 fans who were inside Old Trafford wish he was.

Mata is also a big fan of Giggs, even though he was dropped to the bench by the Welshman for Saturday's game.

"If we speak about Ryan we speak about a Manchester United person," said Mata, who scored twice following his introduction on the hour mark.

"He was very successful here as a player and now he is leading the team. We are all happy because who is better to do it?"

Giggs said prior to kick-off that he wanted to "restore the positivity" around the club following an extremely disappointing campaign under David Moyes.

The 40-year-old certainly did that. The greeting Giggs received from the fans as he strode down the touchline in his club suit was real Roy of the Rovers stuff.

There was little mention of Moyes at Old Trafford. The 'Chosen One' banner had gone and Giggs did his best to make a clean break from the Scot's reign.

Giggs made six changes to the team that lost 2-0 to Everton in Moyes' final game in charge while Marouane Fellaini - the Scot's £27.5million signing - was not even on the bench.

Mata, another of Moyes' signings, was happy to end a tumultuous few days for the club on a high.

"It has been a difficult week for us," the Spaniard told MUTV.

"A change of manager is never good news because it means that you are not doing the things right but today it was very important to win and give the fans what they deserve."

Moyes made no mention of the United playing squad in his midweek statement, but Mata, for one, was sad to see the 51-year-old go.

"I will always be grateful to him because he was the one who brought me here and gave me the chance to play for this amazing club," said Mata, who signed for United from Chelsea for £37.5million in January.

"I wish him and his staff the best in the future."

Giggs admitted he barely slept on the eve of the match as he was worried about dropping some of his team-mates, such as Mata.

But it turned out all right for the interim United boss. Norwich never looked like beating David de Gea once the hosts found their rhythm.

Giggs was happy with his team's performance, but he knows he must stay grounded.

"I thought we ended the game really well," said Giggs, who has been told he will be in charge until the end of the season.

"It would have been nice if Chicho (Javier Hernandez) had scored a fifth at the end but I can't get too greedy. And I can't get carried away either. It's the first game. We are at Old Trafford and we are expected to win.

"We will look forward to the Sunderland game and hope for the same performance."

Louis van Gaal refuses to be drawn on talk he has agreed to become Man Utd manager

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Sunday 27th April 2014 10:26

Louis van Gaal is remaining coy on talk that he is poised to become Manchester United's new manager.

Widespread reports have suggested that van Gaal is the leading contender to replace David Moyes at Old Trafford after leading Holland at this summer's World Cup finals.

United have denied suggestions that they have already agreed a deal with Dutchman van Gaal and insist they have yet to identify a new manager.

Ryan Giggs has been named interim manager until a new boss is found and the United legend got off to a winning start in his first game in charge with a resounding 4-0 victory over Norwich on Saturday.

There have been question marks over the suitability of van Gaal for the United job due to his age, but the 62-year-old insists that would not be an issue for him taking over at Old Trafford.

"Am I young enough for the job? I think you can see that in my CV," van Gaal is quoted as saying in The Sun.

Former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach van Gaal also denied reports that he met with United owners the Glazer family, prior to the departure of Moyes saying: No I didn't meet them."

Backing

Meanwhile, van Gaal's Holland assistant Patrick Kluivert, believes the manager would be perfect for Manchester United.

"He would be absolutely the first pick of any club, especially top teams everywhere in the world," Kluivert told Talksport.

"He likes to let young players make their debut if ready for it.

"The most important thing at the moment is I'm personally enjoying working with him and with the Dutch national team. We're going to the World Cup and hope to do well."

Former Newcastle striker Kluivert has been tipped to join van Gaal at Old Trafford should he be named United's new manager and Kluivert admits he would be honoured to work with his fellow Dutchman at club level.

"Sure I would (do the job) wherever in the world because I love working with him," he said.

"It doesn't matter what club it will be if he asks me to join him, I would be absolutely honoured to be on his side."

Premier League: Ryan Giggs not thinking about future as Manchester United boss

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Saturday 26th April 2014 20:15

Ryan Giggs says he is not looking past the end of his interim spell in charge of Manchester United after getting off to a dream start.

A 4-0 victory over Norwich City on Saturday saw United offer the perfect response at the end of a testing week which saw them part with the services of David Moyes after just 10 months in the Old Trafford hot-seat.

Club stalwart Giggs has been entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing first-team affairs until the end of the season, with no decision taken as yet regarding a long-term successor to Moyes.

Holland coach Louis van Gaal is considered to be the favourite to take the role - due to his vast experience of working across Europe - but Giggs is in the mix and a positive end to the campaign would do his cause no harm.

The Welshman is refusing to get caught up in a debate regarding a possible future in the dugout, though, with it imperative that focus is locked on the present and the push for a top-six finish.

Giggs told Sky Sports: "It's not something that I'm thinking of at the moment. It's just these four games.

"It's taken so much out of me this week that I haven't really had time to look too far into the future. My job now is to get the players ready for Sunderland."

Concentration

Asked what United officials have told him on the plan heading forward, Giggs added: "They've just said to me, 'You've got the job for four games'. That's one down, three to go.

"As far as I'm concerned, that's where my concentration is. I'll do the job to the best of my ability and then after that we'll just have to wait and see what happens."

While reluctant to put himself in the frame to take the post on a full-time basis, Giggs admits he has enjoyed his first taste of life on the other side - after a glittering 24-year playing career.

He said: "I did enjoy it - 4-0, it's a dream day for us. I'm really pleased with the performance. It's always nice to end the game like we did, scoring goals and creating chances.

"The first half we were a little bit slow, so I just reminded them that the tempo needs to be quicker and we need to be a little bit faster. They reacted well to that."

Selection posers did, however, offer something of a headache.

Giggs added: "I didn't sleep last night, for that reason. Players who weren't even on the bench, and leaving the likes of Juan Mata out of the starting XI, it was a difficult decision and a position that I haven't been put in before.

Tough

"It was really tough. I'm interim manager but I'm also one of their team-mates, so to leave them out was tough.

"I could have played two teams because the response of the players this week has been brilliant. I trust them all, so it was really difficult to choose the team.

"But, of course, the likes of Rio (Ferdinand) and Vida (Nemanja Vidic) and Patrice (Evra) have got that experience.

"I wanted experience in the team because I knew it would be an emotionally-charged day and that we wouldn't have things all our own way - Norwich are fighting for their lives. I know these players, the experienced players, and they didn't let me down."

Giggs himself is very much one of the experienced heads, and he insists that his playing days have not been put behind him despite swapping boots for a suit against Norwich.

He said: "I haven't had time to train this week. I'll start again on Monday.

"I knew it was going to be a busy week last week, all the things that entail a manager's job, but I'll get back on the pitch. I can't wait, to be honest."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho rules himself out of Manchester United job

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Friday 25th April 2014 14:28

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has ruled out the possibility of him succeeding David Moyes as the next manager of Manchester United.

The Portuguese coach was reportedly in the running to take over at Old Trafford last summer following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, United instead opted to follow the recommendation of the outgoing manager by appointing Moyes, who this week lost his job following a dismal 10 months in charge.

Mourinho, though, says he remains committed to his current club, who are still in the hunt for both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League crowns this season.

When asked if the Chelsea fans had cause for concern, he responded: "Of course not.

"I don't know how anyone could think about it. I left Real Madrid specifically to come to Chelsea and I signed a four-year contract.

"I told Chelsea they never have to worry about me because I don't want to leave. So I will stay here as long as the club want me to stay.

"There isn't any job that would move me from Chelsea."

Mourinho's side face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday in a game that will go a long way to deciding who claims the Premier League title this season.

League-leaders Liverpool hold a five-point gap over the Blues with three games to go, with third-placed Manchester City six points off top spot with a game in hand.

Mourinho courted controversy this week by suggesting he would rest some players for the trip to Anfield in order to keep them fit for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final tie with Atletico Madrid the following Wednesday.

However, he refused to confirm or deny whether he would field an under-strength side at Anfield, saying that both his decision and the club's views on the matter were "private".

He added: "I want to win on Sunday. We will go to try and win. Nobody goes to a game to try and lose. If you wait until Sunday you will see my team."

Mourinho did confirm that captain John Terry and PFA player of the year nominee Eden Hazard would not be fit for Sunday's game and could also miss Wednesday's European tie at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho was one of three Chelsea staff charged by the Football Association this week for their actions during the recent 2-1 loss to Sunderland.

The Blues boss was charged with misconduct for his post-match comments, in which he congratulated both referee Mike Dean for his performance and head of refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited Mike Riley.

Chelsea made it clear that the charge would not discussed at Friday's press conference, although Mourinho did add: "Every time I speak there is a consequence.

"Even if I say that a referee was amazing that was a reason to be with a charge. I can't say the truth. I don't feel free at all. If you want a better press conference, speak with the FA."

You can watch Chelsea's trip to Liverpool live on Sky Sports 1HD on Sunday from 2pm.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Manchester United should not have sacked David Moyes

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Friday 25th April 2014 11:11

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Manchester United should have given David Moyes more time in the job.

Wenger is the longest serving manager in the Premier League, having arrived at Arsenal in 1996, and he is dismayed by the quick turnaround in managers throughout the country.

Moyes was sacked on Tuesday, just 10 months after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, and United confirmed his dismissal the day after the news was first leaked.

"I don't know the details," said Wenger. "It was just surprising. In these kinds of situations you want the managers to be informed first, eye to eye as we are used to. I didn't look like it was like that.

"But what I regret most is he has been sacked, because it is a big experience in the Premier league. He has shown quality, and you would have loved him to get more time.

"If you want quality people in any job, you need to give them time to develop and to become good, or people with the quality will not come into our job any more.

"The average expectancy of an English professional club at the moment is 11 months, and that is quite unstable. Every guy who is married, has a family, will have a big hesitancy before he goes into that game.

"That means the quality of the coaching and the quality of the managing is under threat."

Wenger stopped short of backing the view of the League Managers Association, who described United's conduct as "unprofessional".

"I don't know enough about it," he said.

But Wenger is adamant the appointment of Moyes should not be viewed as a failure, and people should remember he arrived at Old Trafford on the recommendation of his predecessor.

"I think Alex Ferguson was in a good position to give some credit to his follower, and the fact he got his support was very important for the guy who came in," he said.

"The important factor for the guy who came in was have the support of Alex Ferguson. And I think it was important and it was not a mistake."

Giggs proud to lead United

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Friday 25th April 2014 10:43

Ryan Giggs has admitted his pride at being given the opportunity to manage Manchester United for the rest of the season.

Giggs will take charge of United for the first time on Saturday against Norwich, after being handed interim control of the team when David Moyes was sacked on Tuesday.

The former Wales international has been with United since the age of 14, making more than 1,000 senior appearances, and the club has helped him become the most decorated player in English football history.

Giggs spoke with the media on Friday for the first time since he was appointed, and he said: "I'd just like to say how proud I am to be managing for the remaining four games the club I've supported all my life and been associated with for 26 years.

"I've got to say this is the proudest moment of my life. The club has been the biggest part of my life since I was 14.

"I'm proud, happy, a little bit nervous, but just like I am as a player, I can't wait for the game on Saturday.

"I can't wait for 5.30 tomorrow when we walk out at Old Trafford. I know the place will be rocking. I've told the players 'I trust you and I know what you're capable of. Go out there and show it'.

"This is something I am going to enjoy for, what, two and a half weeks and bring back some smiles to faces of the fans.

"The players have looked really good in training this week, they are all excited as well. Everyone's looking sharp and I've just said to them 'enjoy yourself, give the fans something to smile about in these four games'.

"It's been a frustrating season and we want to end the season on a high. It was a shock to me on Tuesday when I spoke to Ed (Woodward) and he informed me David was leaving and then asked me to take over - it's been a whirlwind week for me.

"It's been different, it's been chaotic. I'm just getting a little taste, it's my fourth day in the job and you can never imagine what you have to do, what it entails becoming a United manager.

"I'd like to put on record my thanks to David for giving me my first chance in coaching. It's something I will always remember when he rang me in the summer and asked me to come on board."

Giggs said he couldn't yet think about taking over from Moyes on a longer-term basis, although joking that he had already given himself a new deal as a player.

"I'm just concentrating on the four games remaining," he added. "That's my main focus, the focus on tomorrow against Norwich, which is going to be tough game as they are fighting for their lives. After that I've not really thought about.

"I've just given myself a new five-year contract so I am using my power while I can. I haven't done much this week but I am still involved as a player as well and I've trained OK."

Giggs is keen to ensure his players return to the United philosophy of play which they became know for under Ferguson over the rest of the season, something Moyes faced criticism over.

"It's going to be my philosophy, Manchester United's philosophy," Giggs added.

"I want the players to play with passion, speed, tempo, be brave, show imagination. All the things I expect of a Manchester United player - work hard but most of all enjoy it.

"If I know I am enjoying the game, I'll express myself a lot more. That's what I'll be doing with the team tomorrow. Over these last four games I want to bring some positivity back.

"We've got three home games at Old Trafford where our form hasn't been great and I want to see goals, tackles, players taking players on.

"I want to get the crowd up and I want the passion that should come from being a Manchester United player."

Sir Alex Ferguson upset at handling of David Moyes' sacking at Manchester United

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Friday 25th April 2014 8:03

Sir Alex Ferguson has broken his silence over David Moyes' sacking at Manchester United, admitting it was "upsetting" the way it was handled.

Moyes was axed as United manager on Tuesday morning 24 hours after news first emerged that the former Everton boss was set to lose his job at Old Trafford.

The Scot, who only signed a six-year contract last summer, was reported to be furious to find his future the subject of widespread speculation before being informed by anyone at the club.

The League Managers Association have now been called in to sort out Moyes' severance settlement after his brief stint at the helm was brought to an abrupt halt.

Ferguson, who played a big part in choosing Moyes as his successor, admitted it was wrong that the news leaked out before Moyes was officially told of his fate by United chief executive Edward Woodward.

Speaking at a charity lunch in Manchester on Thursday, Ferguson is quoted as saying in The Times: "It's upsetting the way it came out."

Sky Sports News has learned that Manchester United acted within stock market rules over the departure of Moyes.

It is understood that the club did not break any rules on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and it is not under any investigation.

The club made a media announcement of Moyes' departure before the NYSE opened for trading on Tuesday.

Ryan Giggs, who was on Moyes' coaching staff, has been named interim manager until a new boss is found and he will take charge for the first time for this weekend's home clash with Norwich City.

A whole host of names have been linked with the vacancy at Old Trafford with Holland coach Louis van Gaal and Real Madrid chief Carlo Ancelotti the early front-runners.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte is the latest name to be credited with an interest in the role, while Borussia Dortmund's Jurgen Klopp has ruled himself out of running.

"I really do think that Manchester United is a great club, but it is also the case that as long as things continue to go as they are here, then I have a clear agreement with Borussia Dortmund.

"Therefore it cannot have anything to do with the greatness of a team, even if there were to be an offer.

"And to react to this is a bit uncomfortable when there has not been an offer, so to reject it before an offer comes is personally embarrassing for me."

No contact from Manchester United says Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp says he has not been approached by Manchester United to fill the managerial vacancy at Old Trafford following David Moyes' sacking earlier this week.

Moyes was sacked by United on Tuesday with the Premier League champions languishing in seventh in the table, 23 points behind leaders Liverpool with just four games remaining.

Klopp had been among the favourites to replace Moyes, but speaking to journalists in Dortmund, he said he had not received an offer from United so there was nothing for him to even think about.

He said: "I really do think that Manchester United is a great club, but it is also the case that as long as things continue to go as they are here, then I have a clear agreement with Borussia Dortmund.

"Therefore it cannot have anything to do with the greatness of a team, even if there were to be an offer. And to react to this is a bit uncomfortable when there has not been an offer, so to reject it before an offer comes is personally embarrassing for me."

Klopp has guided Dortmund to Bundesliga title glory twice, in addition to the Champions League final last season, during his six-year tenure as manager.

The 46-year-old insisted he remains as happy and committed as ever in his current role as the club's head coach.

He said: "I think Man U is great, but I am still really happy here because there are around 1,000 reasons why I really like working at this club.

"The only condition which must be filled, and it is more important than contracts, is that all of those involved have to have the feeling that I am the right coach for this team. As long as that is the case, I don't have to think about anything."

Neville: United don't need figurehead

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Thursday 24th April 2014 7:13

Gary Neville says Manchester United don't need a "big name" manager as they start their quest to replace David Moyes.

Ryan Giggs has been placed in interim charge of the club, but is not to be considered for the full-time role as star names such as Louis van Gaal, Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp are touted as the favourites for the job by the bookmakers.

Former United defender Neville thinks the club are likely to go for a high-profile European coach, but he doesn't think the club necessarily needs a "figurehead" to attract top players and insists the club should sell itself.

"The suggestion that they need a big manager to attract players to the club, I find that a bit sad to be fair," he told Sky Sports.

"The idea that Manchester United Football Club need to have a sort-of figurehead to be able to attract players is a nonsense as far as I'm concerned.

"Manchester United, as a football club, is big enough in its own right to be able to attract players - and they should be.

"It seems to be pointing in that direction and I suppose at the start of next season, if they can spend the money that they have wisely and there's a new big-name manager then times will be exciting again.

"The reality of it is that it doesn't really matter who the manager is. What matters most to Manchester United fans is that they actually win football matches and get back to where they belong."

Moyes issued a statement regarding his sacking on Wednesday, in which he thanked former boss Sir Alex Ferguson but didn't mention any current players or other members of the board.

However, Neville feels Moyes has handled his exit well and says it would be wrong to delve too deeply into what wasn't said in his press release.

"When managers get sacked they always send statements out that, if you like, terminate the story and close the chapter," he added.

"David Moyes has done that and thanked a number of people, describing his time at the club and how proud he was.

"I read the statement and I don't think we should read too much into it. I can't think of too many statements of managers who've been sacked after 10 months that would thank the players.

"In fact, he only named one person by name, which was Sir Alex Ferguson. I don't think he thanked the board, but why should a manager who has been sacked after 10 months go through every single person at the club?

"There's 500 staff at Manchester United. I think he was pretty respectful in his statement to be honest with you. He said he was privileged to get the opportunity, that he enjoyed every minute of it and he was sorry it didn't work out."
