Man Utd v Bayern Munich: Gary Neville says staying in tie is main aim

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Monday 31st March 2014 23:19

Gary Neville says it will be tough for Manchester United to stay in the tie when their depleted side faces Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

David Moyes' side go into the home leg of their Champions League quarter-final against the defending champions with the likes of Robin van Persie and Rafael Da Silva ruled out through injury, while Patrice Evra is suspended and Juan Mata is cup tied.

Neville says it's hard to see how a team that has been comfortably beaten at home by both Liverpool and Manchester City in the last few weeks will be able cope with Pep Guardiola's side, given the list of absentees.

The former United full-back told Monday Night Football: "They've got problems in defence. Rafael went off at the weekend and you wonder if Phil Jones will go to right-back.

"Rooney will play up top and Mata can't play, so in some ways David Moyes might be forced into making a lot of decisions. Will Ryan Giggs come back in because of his performance last time in Europe and his experience?

"I haven't spoken to my brother [first team coach Phil Neville] about it because I come on these shows and I'd rather not know. My view is they've got to somehow try to get to the second leg - and that's going to be tough.

"If you think about the last two home games against real tough opposition - Liverpool and City - and Bayern Munich are better than those two teams.

"It's been so incredibly tough."

Fancies

Neville expects Rio Ferdinand to partner Nemanja Vidic in defence for the first time since the 2-0 defeat at Olympiakos in the last round, while Alex Buttner is expected to deputise for Evra at left-back.

He called on Moyes to play quick forwards who will help out at the back, but says some of Bayern's attacking players will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing United's current back four.

"You look at Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos," Neville added.

"Robben will be up against Buttner who's not played a lot of football. Robben has spoken this week in the press about how he fancies this game - and you can see why.

"Vidic and Ferdinand haven't played too many games together. They played away in Olympiakos and it was difficult for them.

"Can they push up the pitch? It would be difficult for Rio and Nemanja to push up and leave the space behind for Ribery and Robben.

"They are going to have to have depth in the game and probably counter-attack on them, which means the likes of Antonio Valencia, Danny Welbeck, Shinji Kagawa and Rooney - the people who are mobile and can get from box-to-box quickly - are the types you would want to play with the back four that United are going to have out."

SAS chasing record, Utd record strong

http://ift.tt/1dzeoJq

The omens look good for Man Utd, Chelsea and Everton going into the weekend games, while Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez are chasing a record.

We take a look at the key Opta statistics ahead of another crucial weekend in the Premier League, with Manchester City's trip to Arsenal on Saturday evening and Liverpool's clash with Tottenham the following day potentially pivotal in this season's title race.

West Brom host Cardiff in the big game at the other end, the Bluebirds knowing an away win would draw them level on points with Pepe Mel's side.

Manchester United v Aston Villa, 12.45pm

Manchester United have taken more points against Aston Villa than they have against any other team in Premier League history (100).

The Villans have failed to score in four of the last five Premier League games against United.

Man Utd will be missing Robin van Persie, who has scored five goals and assisted two more in his last five Premier League games against Aston Villa.

There have been four braces and one hat-trick in the last four Premier League meetings between these two sides.

Man Utd have won 26 and lost just one of their last 36 Premier League matches against the West Midlanders.

Aston Villa have won just one of their last seven Premier League away matches (W1 D2 L4).

Villa have won just three of their last 60 league away trips against Man Utd, losing 42.

Wayne Rooney has netted 10 Premier League goals against Villa, his joint-highest haul versus any one opponent in the competition. He is in good scoring form, having netted four in his last five Premier League appearances.

Manchester United have lost more Premier League home games this season (6) than in the previous three season put together (5).

Manchester United have lost six home games in a Premier League season for only the second time (2001/02); they have never lost more.

Crystal Palace v Chelsea

The Eagles have won just five of their 25 Premier League London derbies at Selhurst Park.

Chelsea have won eight and lost none of the last 12 league meetings against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea are unbeaten in their nine Premier League London derbies this season (W6 D3).

2004-05 was the last time that Crystal Palace were in the top flight and they were relegated, while Chelsea won the title under new boss Jose Mourinho.

This is Crystal Palace's 50th Premier League London derby, but they have the lowest points per game of any of the capital clubs in local clashes (0.88 per game).

Palace have won just three points in their seven London derby games this season in the Premier League (L6 D0 W1), netting just three goals in the process.

Chelsea inflicted Tony Pulis' heaviest ever defeat as a Premier League coach - 7-0 versus Stoke City in April 2010 at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have conceded just three goals in their last seven Premier League away games and defeat last time out against Aston Villa ended a run of six without loss on the road (W4 D2).

Palace have failed to score in four of their last five Premier League games and have the worst chance conversion rate in the Premier League this season (7.5%).

Jose Mourinho's side have allowed fewer shots on target against them than any other team in the top division (95) and have kept the most clean sheets (14) this season.

Mile Jedinak of Palace has committed the most fouls in the Premier League this season (55), while Chelsea's Eden Hazard is the division's most fouled player (85).

Newcastle have fired in 198 shots at goal from outside the box this season, a higher total than any other team. Five of the first 10 goals they scored this season were from long range but just three of the last 28 netted have been from outside the area.

Only Liverpool (12) have scored more headed goals than Southampton (10) in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle have won all seven away Premier League games where they have been ahead and lost all seven where they have trailed away from home.

Stoke City v Hull City

There have been exactly two goals scored in each of the last four Stoke v Hull City matches at the Britannia Stadium.

Hull have won just one of their last nine league matches against Stoke (W1 D5 L3).

There has been a 90th minute goal scored in three of the last four Premier League meetings between Stoke and Hull.

Stoke have recovered more points from losing positions than any other team in the Premier League (15).

There have been 22 goals scored in just five Premier League meetings between Norwich and Swansea.

Swansea have won just four of their last 20 Premier League home games (W4 D7 L9).

Norwich have won none of their last seven Premier League away games, losing the last five in a row (W0 D2 L5).

The Welsh side have scored as many goals (7) in their last three Premier League matches as they had managed in the previous 12.

Cardiff City have shipped 34% of their total goals conceded in the final 15 minutes of match, a divisional high proportion.

The Baggies have benefited from more goals scored by substitutes than any other team in the top flight (10) including four of the last six they have netted.

No side have had more players score a Premier League goal than West Brom this season (16), although their top goalscorer (Berahino) only has four goals.

34% of Cardiff's attempts at goal have come from set pieces, the highest proportion in the top flight this campaign.

Arsenal v Manchester City, 5.30pm

There have been six red cards in the last seven Premier League meetings between Man City (4) and Arsenal (2). Five of those have come in the last three meetings at the Emirates.

Manchester City scored six goals from just seven shots on target when they beat Arsenal 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium last December.

There have been just four goals scored in the last five meetings in all competitions between Arsenal and Man City at the Emirates Stadium.

Victory at the Emirates last season ended a run of 27 league games without a win for Man City away against Arsenal (D8 L19).

Arsenal have won just three of their last nine Premier League games (W3 D3 L3), this after a run of five successive victories beforehand.

Man City have converted the highest percentage of shots into goals of any team in the Premier League (20%).

Olivier Giroud has scored five goals in his last three games at the Emirates in all competitions.

Manchester City have kept five consecutive clean sheets in the top-flight for the first time since 1915 but they have never kept six in a row in the top flight.

Tottenham haven't lost three Premier League away games in a row since January 2009.

Tottenham against Liverpool has seen the joint-most penalties in Premier League history (17 along with Everton v Newcastle), with 11 of them coming at Anfield.

Spurs didn't manage a single shot on target in their 0-5 defeat to the Reds in December at White Hart Lane - the only game they haven't managed one this season. This result marked the end of Andre Villas-Boas' stint as Tottenham manager.

Liverpool have won 11 and lost none of their last 12 Premier League games at Anfield.

Daniel Sturridge has scored 11 goals in 11 Premier League appearances at Anfield this season.

Liverpool have only failed to score in one of their last 16 Premier League games at Anfield.

David Moyes to face press amid reports Manchester United fans plan plane protest

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Friday 28th March 2014 6:59

David Moyes will face the press this afternoon amid reports of a protest calling for him to leave Manchester United.

According to widespread reports in Friday's national newspapers, a group of United supporters has paid for a plane to fly over Old Trafford on Saturday trailing an anti-Moyes message.

The message will read 'Wrong One: Moyes Out' in answer to 'The Chosen One' banner which continues to fly inside the stadium despite heavy home defeats to rivals Liverpool and Manchester City in the past month.

Stewards have recently been deployed to guard the banner, which references the fact Moyes was hand-picked for the job by Sir Alex Ferguson.

United are already guaranteed their lowest Premier League points total and host Aston Villa on Saturday in seventh place, 18 points behind leaders Chelsea less than a year after winning the title.

Moyes can expect more criticism if Villa leave with anything, but the visitors' manager Paul Lambert has called the planned plane stunt "extreme".

He said: "I think some of the criticism is way over the top, I really do. If you are talking about flying an aeroplane over the stadium with a message to say you are not wanted, it is a bit extreme.

"I think the magnitude of the job is huge. Only David can truly tell you about that, but from the outside looking in, it is a massive, massive job.

"It is not as if he is standing out there and thinking 'things are not going well, but I still feel good'. He is human like everybody else and when you get that level of criticism it would not be nice."

Moyes' pre-match press conference is scheduled for 1.30pm this afternoon, when he is expected to face questions about the protest and United's poor form.

Follow our live football blog for first news of David Moyes' press conference. You can also watch it on Sky Sports News - on your TV, mobile or PC.

Eric Cantona is confident Manchester United will be challenging for all the honours soon

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Wednesday 26th March 2014 17:36

Former Manchester United favourite Eric Cantona is confident the team will be back challenging for all the major honours very soon.

United are 12 points off the top four after their 3-0 reverse to Manchester City on Tuesday, and the team's only chance of silverware this season is the Champions League.

Current holders Bayern Munich stand between the Old Trafford club and progress to the semi-finals, but United fans are fretting over the prospect of missing out on next season's Champions League.

Cantona said: "Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world. They have been at the highest level for 20 years, and I think they will come back very, very soon.

"At every big club it is sometimes like this, but they have proved in the past they have the level to come back and I'm sure Manchester United will come back very soon."

And Cantona believes David Moyes will be given time to rebuild the United squad after a difficult first season in the job, having replaced Sir Alex Ferguson last summer.

"I think he has a long term project. At the moment it is not very good, but maybe next year it will be great and everybody will see. But I think he is strong enough to handle the pressure," Cantona added.

Video: Scholes hits out at Arsenal

http://ift.tt/1jvbaJI

Paul Scholes blasted Arsenal on Tuesday - and also gave his verdict on Manchester United, Manchester City, Ross Barkley and the title race.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was in the Sky Sports studio to analyse his former side's clash with rivals Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Before, during and after the contest, the 11-time Premier League winner had his say on a wide range of issues - and launched a scathing attack on Arsenal.

As well as a frank assessment of the Gunners' plummet from the summit of the Premier League, Scholes discussed David Moyes' future at Old Trafford, how the club can get the best out of £37million signing Juan Mata, plus the title race and Ross Barkley's rise.

Arsenal's waning title challenge

"They capitulated at Chelsea and it seems to be a similar theme when they play the top teams - it happened at Liverpool and they conceded six against City.

"For one reason or another, players just seem to go missing. The Artetas, Cazorlas, Rosickys, Ozils, it seems like they go on the pitch with no discipline. They play a few nice little one-twos, a bit of tippy-tappy football and don't bother running back.

"There's no leader with them, no Patrick Vieira, no Tony Adams, no Martin Keown. Sometimes when you're a midfield player up against it, you just need to try and stop the flow of attacks - but these, they go 2-0 down, have a walk up front, lose the ball, play a nice little one-two and not bother sprinting back. And they wonder why they're in the position they're in.

"It's the Arsenal fans you feel sorry for, because they seem to get the same thing every year, maybe a little hint of the title for a few weeks and then they go to Chelsea, City or Liverpool and do nothing.

"Fans expect Arsenal to be going for the league trophy but although they're in fourth, they're a million miles away in my eyes.

"When we played against those Arsenal teams that had the leaders I mentioned, it was really tough. You play against Arsenal now and you think 'just get stuck in and you've won the game'.

"Jack Wilshere came on the scene and what a top young player he looked, but he's never really gone on. He needs characters like Vieira next to him to take him to the next level. Injuries haven't helped him, but he doesn't look any better a player now than when he was 17."

David Moyes' difficult tenure at Manchester United

"It's difficult for a new manager coming in. He needs time to get to know his players and I think a big problem is that he doesn't know his best team yet.

"The players haven't helped in that way because they're not playing in the way they should do and that makes it even harder for the manager to find his best team.

"Away from home I don't think they've been too bad at all, without the Man City defeat and the Chelsea defeat they've done really well away from home. The problem has been at home. But when you haven't got pace you're going to struggle. Man United without pace is nothing.

"Moyes is only nine months into the job, though. You have to stand by him. OK, he's made a couple of signings that haven't quite worked out yet but in the summer he's going to need backing, there's no doubt about that.

"Was he backed as well as he could have been last summer? I'm not too sure. But this summer, he has to be backed - and I think he knows he needs players."

Which areas must Man Utd strengthen in the summer

"It looks to me like there's a few areas that need addressing. You could say that they've been looking for a central midfielder for quite a few years now, and maybe haven't quite come up with the answer.

"Defensively as well, (Nemanja) Vidic is going, it looks like Rio (Ferdinand) and maybe (Patrice) Evra are going as well so that's three of your back four. That's another area he's got to look after.

"I think going forward we're alright, with the quality of (Robin) van Persie, and Wayne Rooney, and (Juan) Mata in his right position. I think we're alright up there, so it's probably midfield and defence where we need to look."

How does Moyes get the best out of Juan Mata?

"He's a classic number 10 off the front. He played that position against West Ham and did quite well but he's not really hit the ground running as much as you'd expect. For £37million you want goals.

"In his defence he has played out of position quite a bit, out wide. I played on the left hand side quite a few times and quite enjoyed it because you can come inside and the right-back didn't have to pick you up, the midfield player didn't know where you were and the centre half, does he come or not. It was a decent position to get yourself in the box and score goals.

"But on the other hand, when the other team had the ball you're up and down all day. That just wasn't my game and I don't think it's Juan Mata's game either."

United's mentality this season

"It was always the way for us, we could be two or three down but we never felt we were beaten. But I never felt United were going to get back into this game, even at 1-0. I was never confident we were going to create chances and score goals."

Which was better, the halfway line efforts of Wayne Rooney or David Beckham?

"They're both great goals. Wayne's is probably a little bit more difficult. It's a volley, it's a harder technique - but I'd probably still stick with David Beckham's goal, just with the way it went on the full into the net made it look a more beautiful goal.

"But they're two unbelievable players and two unbelievable goals."

Manchester City's attacking talent

"They're a great team, there's no doubt about that. They had that run in the first part of the season when they were just destroying teams.

"Sergio Aguero then got injured and they went off the boil a little bit but the great thing about them is they've got goals absolutely everywhere.

"If you look across the midfield, Yaya Toure has scored 20 goals - which for a centre midfield player is brilliant - but these forwards haven't needed much help, they're all contributing. Their biggest strength is the amount of goals they have in the team."

Vincent Kompany

"He'd have to be right up there. I've been lucky enough to play with some great defenders. Rio Ferdinand in his pomp, what a defender he was, and he could come forward and play as well. Jaap Stam was a great centre-half.

"Vincent Kompany looks the real deal, though, and is probably the best in the world right now. If City were to lose him through injury - which is possible - they could really struggle without him."

The skill of David Silva

"You have to be impressed with what he does. It's almost glued to his left foot - and then he can do the same with his right foot. Not many left-footed players are good with their right foot but either foot he'll take it.

"He can play a pass as well. He's got a little bit of pace about him although he's not the quickest and he can manoeuvre the ball well and he can get past people.

"He's got a goal in him, too. In the first 20 minutes against Man United he was unplayable. I'd say it was a joy to watch but I'm not too sure about that!"

Ross Barkley's potential

"I'm sure he'll have a big say in the summer for England, with a bit of luck.

"He's already a really good player but he can be a really top player. I've seen quite a bit of him now and what I've seen I like. He's doing really well.

"I know Phil Neville worked with him for a couple of years and he really liked him as well. I'm pleased for him, I'm pleased he's English and hopefully he can carry on progressing."

The title race

"The run-in is always tough. Whatever teams you play against it's always difficult in those last few games to finish your season off with wins.

"Look at Man City's remaining games - Arsenal away? You'd fancy City. Liverpool away? Liverpool at home are a tough, tough team to play against. Everton away is another tough one. The rest you'd expect City will probably win.

"But looking at Chelsea's fixtures, Liverpool away is the only doubtful one. Jose Mourinho is a big factor for them - if it wasn't for him I don't think Chelsea would be as close as they are.

"City, with the squad they've got they should be clear and should win this league but, looking at the fixtures, they've still got some tough places to go."

Wayne Rooney admits opposing teams no longer fear the trip to Old Trafford

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Wednesday 26th March 2014 7:01

Wayne Rooney admitted Manchester United have lost their fear factor at Old Trafford after they slumped to a 3-0 derby defeat against Manchester City

United's recent revival was ended in crushing fashion, with Edin Dzeko opening the scoring after just 42 seconds in front of the stunned home fans.

Dzeko added his second after the break and Yaya Toure's late strike condemned United to their sixth Premier League defeat at Old Trafford - more than in the previous three campaigns.

Asked why United had struggled on their own patch, Rooney said: "I don't know but it's not good enough.

"We can't lose six home games in a season and we have to put that right and make this a place teams fear again.

"We know we have to respond. It's a bad night for us all but we have to move on."

Juan Mata wasted United's best opening in the first-half, while City goalkeeper Joe Hart denied Danny Welbeck from close range after the break.

Rooney felt the hosts lacked a cutting edge and cursed their sluggish start to the match.

"We didn't deserve to win. We weren't clinical enough and we didn't create enough chances," he said.

"No-one likes to lose a derby game - they're big games and they're great to win, but when you lose it's not a great feeling.

"It was a poor start - I'm not even sure whether we touched the ball before they scored.

"After that, I thought we did okay and got back into the game a little bit but their second goal was a killer."

Premier League: Paul Scholes advises Manchester United to stick with David Moyes

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Tuesday 25th March 2014 23:39

Paul Scholes feels his old club Manchester United should stand by boss David Moyes and back him in the transfer market.

Moyes has already shelled out £27.5million on Marouane Fellaini and £37.1million on Juan Mata since taking the reins at Old Trafford from Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, Tuesday night's 3-0 defeat by rivals City marked the sixth time this season that the reigning champions have been turned over at home in the Premier League.

They have also slipped 15 points behind Manuel Pellegrini's title chasers in the table but former Red Devils star Scholes, a guest pundit on Sky Sports' Football Special, is of the opinion that United must back their manager.

"You have to," said Scholes. "He's only nine months into the job. You have to stand by him.

"OK, he's made a couple of signings that haven't quite worked out yet, as he would have liked.

"In the summer, he's going to need backing - there's no doubt about that. Was he backed as well as he could have been last summer? I'm not too sure. But this summer, he has to be backed - and I think he knows he needs players."

Many United fans have long been crying out for midfield additions to the squad but Scholes says there are several departments of concern.

"It looks to me like there's a few areas that need addressing," he added.

"You could say that they've been looking for a central midfielder for quite a few years now, and maybe haven't quite come up with the answer.

"But it's defensively as well. (Nemanja) Vidic is going, it looks like Rio (Ferdinand) and maybe (Patrice) Evra are going as well so that's three of your back four. That's another area he's got to look after.

"I think going forward we're alright, with the quality of (Robin) van Persie, and Wayne Rooney, and (Juan) Mata in his right position. I think we're alright up there, so it's probably midfield and defence where we need to look."

United still have a Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich to play, but Graeme Souness says that is unlikely to put any gloss on their troubled campaign.

"This season, it's obviously down to the Champions League," said Souness.

"They're going to play the team that many regard as the best around, so that's not going to be easy.

"The Manchester United supporters will not be happy, understandably so. And I think they're going to have to be very patient, because I don't see this as a quick fix.

"I don't think, when you're talking about putting it right, you can talk about it in terms of month or years.

"I think you have to talk transfer windows. Because with every transfer window, you're not going to get the players you ideally want.

"You might have to wait six months or a year to get the ones you want. So for me this is not a quick fix here, and these supporters are going to have to accept that."

United look increasingly unlikely to qualify for Europe's elite competition next season, but Souness believes they should still be able to attract top players, though some of their targets will turn them down.

"You can put United in a group of maybe half a dozen clubs that are uniquely special," added the former Liverpool star.

"In terms of finance, they don't have to be in the Champions League to go out and buy the very best players. The transfer fees and the salary will not be an issue.

"Playing for United but not being in the Champions League might be an issue for some players - but this is a unique club."

Premier League: David Moyes says Manchester United must aspire to City "standard"

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Tuesday 25th March 2014 22:41

David Moyes wants his Manchester United players to raise their game and try to match the level of their conquerors City.

The Red Devils manager suffered the sixth Premier League home defeat of his first season in charge as Manuel Pellegrini's near neighbours eased to a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

For the second time in 10 days, Moyes found himself explaining the reasons behind a heavy home defeat to a regional rival - Liverpool having won by the same scoreline against the reigning champions.

Two goals from Edin Dzeko and a late Yaya Toure strike did the damage, but in truth City - now 5/6 title favourites with Sky Bet - were superior in every department.

Moyes told Sky Sports: "I think we've played a very good side and it's the sort of standard and level we need to try and aspire to get ourselves to at this moment in time.

"I think we need to play better. We're needing to come up a couple of levels at the moment and we're not quite there.

"We didn't start the game well, in the first 15 minutes they were very good and we've conceded a goal in 45 seconds so we've not given ourselves a fighting chance.

"I thought we grew into the first half and got better and until the second goal we had a chance, but on the night we didn't do well enough."
