Ashley Young: New lease of life under Louis van Gaal

Ashley Young: New lease of life under Louis van Gaal

Playing in his new wing-back role, Ashley Young is enjoying a new lease of life at Manchester United under Louis van Gaal, writes Adam Bate.

There were many aspects to the excitement that surrounded the appointment of Louis van Gaal as Manchester United manager.

But for supporters of a certain inclination, part of the barely-containable glee came from the thought of what the notoriously tough Van Gaal would make of the squad with which he'd been left. 'Bomb out the deadwood,' came the familiar refrain.

Of course, unless you're Felix Magath with a Monday migraine, things rarely work out that way. Van Gaal is savvy enough to make the best of what he's got, and to the surprise of many that continues to mean a key role for the much-maligned Ashley Young.

When the subject of his wing-backs was broached following an impressive Boxing Day win over Newcastle in which Young had put in a series of fine crosses from his new position out on the left, Van Gaal was typically forthright in his reply.

Young had been part of his plans right from the outset. Moreover, he'd been a factor in his choice of system.

"I have seen Ashley Young also be fantastic in the US when we played the same system," said Van Gaal. "I played that system because of Young and Valencia because they are not full-backs, they are wing-backs and that is why we are playing with three defenders, but I want them more in attack and they showed that in the last matches so I'm very pleased with them."

The reference to United's time in the United States recalls Young's form during pre-season when he was arguably the team's stand-out player.

Despite admitting that a pre-season friendly with Inter was only the second time he'd ever played the role, he'd been quick to embrace his fresh opportunity to impress.

"I can play in both wing-back positions and if the manager calls on me to do something I've got every confidence in myself to go out there and play well," said Young at the time.

When the Premier League season began, the learning curve was steep, starting with an opening-day defeat at home to Swansea, and a groin injury soon saw Young - and the 3-5-2 - shelved.

But since returning to the team during the early stages of the 2-1 win at Arsenal, Young has been a fixture in a United side that have now won seven and drawn two of their last nine games. Back in the wing-back role, he brings energy, pace and quality to Van Gaal's team, and the statistics bear out his positive influence.

Against Tottenham on Sunday, as was also the case in the wins over Southampton and Stoke, the Premier League tracking data shows that Young made more high-intensity sprints than any other United player. He was clocked as United's fastest player in their recent matches against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Newcastle.

Only Angel di Maria has produced more successful dribbles for United so far this season, while Young has completed more crosses than any of his team-mates - including the one that found Radamel Falcao for the equaliser at Villa Park.

Tellingly, he's already easily surpassed his numbers for last season in those departments despite not yet playing as many minutes as in 2013-14.

From playing three hours of football inside 48 hours to tackling his reinvention with good humour, much of the credit must go to Young himself.

"Good to see another member of the full-back club on Twitter," was his reaction when Rafael joined the social networking site, and it's clear this is not a case of a player sulking when asked to perform an unfamiliar role.

It's an unlikely turn of events for a player used as a No.10 by England at Euro 2012 before seeing his career lose momentum soon after. A missed penalty in the quarter-finals of that tournament loaded more baggage on a talent who had already found himself as the punchline to a hundred diving jokes. In and out of the United team, the decline could have been unsalvageable.

Instead Young has seized his chance and looks set to play an important role in getting Manchester United back into the Champions League.

The return of European football to Old Trafford will in turn necessitate a bigger squad and with Young under contract until the summer of 2016, Van Gaal's flexible friend can expect to be a part of that journey. It's been quite a turnaround.

La Liga: Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale happy with life in Spain

http://ift.tt/1h8Rvug

Wednesday 31st December 2014 12:34

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale is keen to remain at the club, despite speculation he could join Manchester United in the summer.

Bale moved from Tottenham to Madrid in a world-record £85.3m deal in September 2013 and has been a key performer in their run of 22 straight victories in competitive matches.

Real president Florentino Perez warned on Tuesday Bale would not be allowed to leave the Bernabeu at any price and the player himself insists he is happy with life in the Spanish capital.

"Go to Manchester United? I am very happy in Madrid, a city, a climate and a club that I love," Bale said on the club’s mid-season tour to Dubai.

"My contract ends in 2019 and I could sign a renewal. I am very happy at Madrid and I hope to win many more titles in the future.

Fantastic Year

"It has been a fantastic year for me. I wanted to come to Real Madrid to win titles and work alongside the best players and that is exactly what I have done in a single year.

“I hope that we keep improving, winning more titles and that I can keep giving my all."

Bale also paid tribute to team-mates Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, who have scored 57 goals between them this season.

"He (Ronaldo) is an impressive player," added Bale.

"Everybody knows what he is like - it is great to be playing alongside him. What he does so that the team can keep winning and improving is fantastic.

"The forwards we have are extremely good. The three of us really like playing together. We work very well together, as we demonstrated last season with the titles we won.

"The potential we have up front is fantastic and we want to keep improving."

Premier League: Wayne Rooney calls for change to Christmas schedule

Wayne Rooney: Festive fixtures need looking at

Wayne Rooney: Festive fixtures need looking at

Wayne Rooney has called for a change to the hectic festive fixture list before the exertion leads to a serious injury.

The Manchester United and England skipper scored twice in the 3-1 Boxing Day victory over Newcastle and lined up again less than 48 hours later as Louis van Gaal named the same starting XI for Sunday's goalless draw at Tottenham.

The Red Devils boss labelled the match at White Hart Lane as "ugly" and a "struggle for life," and Rooney has added his voice to those calling for a re-think on the Christmas schedule.

"It is not easy playing two games in two days and you do lose a lot of the quality from both teams," said Rooney.

"It is difficult. We started so well in the first half but in the second half it was tough and hopefully in the future it has to change.

"It will probably take someone getting a really bad injury from doing it (playing twice in two days), which no one wants to see, but it is very demanding and I think it does need looking at.

"With the weather as well, with the fans coming from London or travelling from Manchester, it has been tough. It is a lot of money to spend over Christmas as well. But it is what it is, we have to deal with that and have to try and perform well."

Rooney insists however that he wants to lead the side once again for the New Year's Day trip to Stoke.

"As a player you want to play," he said. "It is tough, but you want to play and try and help the team win. If you look at all the games (on Sunday) towards the end then they will all lose a lot of quality.

"We need to do our recovery properly and be ready for Stoke. We will go and prepare right now, get plenty of food and drink down us to hydrate."

United beat Stoke 2-1 at Old Trafford at the start of December, with Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata on the scoresheet, but following the north London stalemate they will travel to the Britannia Stadium with only two wins on the road since Van Gaal took charge.

"We created enough chances in the first half and should have been two, possibly even three, nil up and it was disappointing to go in 0-0 and in the second half it was a bit scrappy," Rooney said of the Tottenham result.

"We defended well, there were a lot of crosses into the box and we defended them well - I think that was always going to happen."

Louis van Gaal blames congested Christmas schedule for Manchester United's draw with Tottenham

Louis van Gaal has criticised the Christmas schedule

Louis van Gaal has criticised the Christmas schedule

Louis van Gaal has blamed his Manchester United side’s subdued second-half performance in their 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on the congested Christmas schedule.

United dominated the first half at White Hart Lane but fell off the pace after the break as both teams failed to find a breakthrough.

The fixture came less than 48 hours after the final whistle was blown on United’s 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day and Van Gaal admitted his players had run out of steam.

He said: “I have said one month ago what I think about this [the Christmas period]. It is scientifically proven that the body cannot recover within 48 hours.

“When you, as an FA, allow that, to play matches [so close together], you see what it is like. The second half was much different to the first half, not only for Manchester United, but also for Tottenham Hotpsur.

Title blow

“I think Tottenham Hotspur can play much better than today, and also my team could have played in the second half much better.”

The draw extended United’s unbeaten run to nine matches, but two points dropped represented a blow to their renewed hopes of challenging for the Premier League title.

It was a repeat of their inability to defeat a 10-man Aston Villa side on December 20 and although Van Gaal expects his side to improve in the new year, he said the result at White Hart Lane was proof that they are not yet ready to be champions.

He added: “When you cannot win such type of matches, when you are the better team, against Aston Villa and also now, it’s very difficult to be the champion at the end of the season.”

Premier League: Manchester United rue missed first-half chances after draw with Tottenham

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris saves from Robin van Persie.

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris saves from Robin van Persie.

Manchester United failed to make the most of a dominant first-half display as they were held to a goalless draw by Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Juan Mata went closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes with a free-kick that hit the post and was hacked away on the line.

Ashley Young also saw a shot brilliantly tipped over the bar by Hugo Lloris while Robin van Persie was unable to finish from a few yards out.

United also had chances in the second half as Van Persie missed the target with a volley and Mata blasted over the bar from a promising position.

Spurs rarely threatened at the other end but did finish stronger and could have snatched the points as Ryan Mason fired over with just David de Gea to beat.

Had Mason’s shot hit the back of the net then United would have certainly rued the chances they missed in a largely one-sided first half.

Having named an unchanged Premier League team for the first time since November 2012, United looked far more settled than Spurs – who made four changes - and created all the best openings.

The first sight of goal for the visitors came in the seventh minute when Mata clipped a pin-point ball over the top of the defence for Wayne Rooney, but his poor touch prevented a one-on-one chance.

Mata set up another chance shortly afterwards as he slid a ball through for Radamel Falcao, who couldn’t quite sort his feet out and ended up shooting at Lloris.

Spurs offered little at the other end aside from the odd counter attack and were fortunate not to fall behind after 22 minutes as Mata’s free-kick bounced off the post and was then hacked clear from under the bar.

Chances continued to come and go for United with Van Persie unable to fire home from close range and Rooney seeing a header saved by Lloris.

The Spurs keeper then pulled out a top-drawer save as the half came to a close, tipping Young’s curling shot over the bar.

Even though the hosts improved after the break, United still had opportunities, with Van Persie missing the target with a volley from 10 yards out.

Mata then fired over the bar from Rafael’s pull-back, but United’s grip on the game loosened in the final 20 minutes as Spurs started to look stronger.

De Gea was called upon to save Fazio’s low shot before the home side created their best chance of the match in the 82nd minute.

Harry Kane did brilliantly to hold the ball up against four United defenders and then slid a clever reverse pass through for Mason, who fired wastefully over the bar as he was bearing down on goal.

Spurs continued to press in the final 10 minutes but couldn’t grab another late winner as both sides settled for a share of the spoils less than 48 hours after their last outings.
