David Moyes was delighted with how Manchester United responded against Stoke City

http://www.teamtalk.com/images/icon-print.gif

Saturday 26th October 2013 17:48

David Moyes was delighted with how Manchester United responded during their 3-2 win against Stoke City at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.

United were trailing 2-1 at the break after Peter Crouch and Marko Arnautovic scored either side of Robin van Persie's equaliser.

Stoke had not won at Old Trafford since 1976 and it looked for long periods like Mark Hughes' side might leave Manchester with all three points.

But, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Moyes was quick to praise the attitude of his players.

Moyes said: "We came good in the end. It didn't feel good in the first half. We went a goal down and got ourselves back into it, only to be behind at the break.

"It was a big challenge for the players. They did it though, showed great energy after the game earlier in the week and they kept going until the end.

"Stoke haven't scored many goals this season but they haven't conceded many either. You know you have to work hard to win the game against them and that was the case."

Moyes opted to introduce Adnan Januzaj from the bench with United trailing 2-1, and the manager says that he has got a fantastic future ahead of him.

Moyes added: "He's a really good talent and in the future he'll play an awful lot of games for Manchester United. He's an excellent player.

"Defensively though we weren't at our best today and I have to thank my goalkeeper for doing his job really well too.

"Let's hope we can keep on winning. I understand that you have to win in style here and I thought we did that in the last 15 minutes today."

David Moyes praises Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney's current form

http://www.teamtalk.com/images/icon-print.gif

Friday 25th October 2013 15:13

Manchester United boss David Moyes declined to comment on reports of a new contract for Wayne Rooney but lauded the striker at the end of a week that reignited doubts over his Old Trafford future.

Sir Alex Ferguson reiterated in a new autobiography released on Thursday his claim that Rooney wanted to leave in the summer, also calling into question the England forward's fitness.

Rooney, who has scored five United goals this season, glossed over comments in the Scot's memoir after a midweek victory over Real Sociedad, preferring instead to emphasise his rapport with the new man in charge.

And while Moyes refused to be drawn on a contract that expires in 2015, he insisted the Ferguson fallout had not complicated his or Rooney's preparations for Saturday's visit of Stoke.

"I couldn't tell you," Moyes said when asked about Rooney's contractual situation. "All I do know is that what you see on the pitch he's playing very well.

"It's been great working with Wayne because he's an excellent footballer. I've said from day one he's been great.

"He had a very good game in midweek. We want that form to continue. We want him to keep scoring goals. He is a big plus for us just now.

"He's in good nick, his talent is unquestionable. He's physically very good, mentally in a good place and his form has been good."

United head into Saturday's clash with Stoke eight points adrift of leaders Arsenal, having lost three times already this season.

But Moyes gave short shrift to the assertion by Potters boss and ex-United player Mark Hughes that there was an air of vulnerability about United that did not exist under Ferguson.

"That might be Mark's opinion," said Moyes. "He's entitled to that but we'll wait and see.

"There's only two months of the season gone and there will be a lot of slip-ups by teams between now and the end of the season. We don't want to lose many more if we can help it."

United give Moyes reasons for optimism

http://www.teamtalk.com/images/icon-print.gif

Thursday 24th October 2013 10:19

Manchester United's Champions League display against Real Sociedad gave David Moyes reasons for optimism, says TEAMtalk guest Matt Stanger.

"One of the things we will be looking to try and do is finish matches off. We have had some opportunities, but I have been saying that near enough from the start. We have had quite a few chances and not taken them. Whilst it is like that you are at risk."

For Saturday against Southampton, read Wednesday at home to Real Sociedad, as Manchester United secured a narrow 1-0 win at Old Trafford to provide brief respite to David Moyes. The champions arguably deserved more from a bright attacking performance that yielded 18 attempts at goal, but their lack of killer instinct remains a concern for the new manager.

Following criticism of his cautious approach against Southampton, Moyes showed plenty of intent with his starting line-up against Sociedad in the UEFA Champions League despite Robin van Persie missing out with a toe injury. With Danny Welbeck also absent, the manager opted to replace the duo with Javier Hernandez and Shinji Kagawa, and United responded with a blistering start that saw them take the lead after only two minutes through Inigo Martinez's own goal.

Although Wayne Rooney's performance behind Hernandez was pivotal, Ryan Giggs' contribution alongside Michael Carrick in central midfield was also crucial, as he looked to play the ball forward at speed to find Rooney and Kagawa. It seems that every time Giggs is written off - as he was following a final 20 minutes on Saturday that coincided with Southampton's equaliser - he bounces back to prove his doubters wrong, with Wednesday offering another example of his longevity.

It was encouraging to see United move the ball quickly and with purpose in the final third, but it was only in the second half that they really began to carve Real Sociedad open as the match opened up. The visitors' onslaught immediately after the interval - in which they struck five shots in a frantic seven minutes - may have left Moyes thinking about making conservative changes, but on this occasion he resisted the urge.

It was certainly the right decision, with United gradually re-asserting their authority and Real Sociedad shrinking back into their shell to muster just two further attempts before the final whistle. The old confidence gradually began to ripple through United, with Jonny Evans and Phil Jones giving commanding performances, Giggs and Carrick demonstrating their experience and Valencia reminding everyone that Rooney is not the only improver in Moyes' first XI this season.

Perhaps Moyes could have replaced the ineffective Hernandez at an earlier stage to allow Kagawa more time in his favoured central role, but it was at least pleasing to see the playmaker enjoy his first 90 minutes of the season and only his seventh since joining United in 2012.

The lack of killer instinct is still a concern, however, with only five of United's 18 attempts hitting the target and Hernandez failing to have a single shot in his 80 minutes on the pitch. That worry is likely to be remedied by Van Persie's return, as Moyes searches for more little victories to prove that he can instil the desired mentality in a team famed for its ruthlessness.

Wayne Rooney: No contact with Sir Alex Ferguson

http://www.teamtalk.com/images/icon-print.gif

Wednesday 23rd October 2013 22:22

Wayne Rooney has revealed that he has not spoken to Sir Alex Ferguson since his former manager's retirement.

The England international, who had looked set to leave Old Trafford this summer after Ferguson claimed he had handed in a transfer request, insisted he had no desire to rake over the past.

Ferguson, now a director at Old Trafford, talked about his relationship with Rooney, and his concerns over his fitness, in his new book.

Asked if he would respond to Ferguson's comments, Rooney told Sky Sports: "No, I'm happy playing football. That's the past, I'm looking to the future.

"He's come back and corrected the story that I put a transfer request in...he's gone back and proven that I didn't.

"He's obviously got his own opinion. I haven't seen him since he retired. I'm happy under the new manager.

"The new coach that has come in has given me a new lease of life, I'm really enjoy working under David Moyes.

"We are working to be successful as a team. We have a lot of players who are hungry. Results haven't been what we want, but we're working to put that right."

Champions League: Wayne Rooney was happy with Man United's 1-0 win over Real Sociedad

http://www.teamtalk.com/images/icon-print.gif

Wednesday 23rd October 2013 22:06

Wayne Rooney was the toast of Old Trafford after his mazy early run proved decisive in Manchester United's 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in Champions League Group A.

The striker, who turns 28 on Thursday, weaved his way into the box after just two minutes and saw his shot cannon off the goalframe before being diverted into his own net by the hapless Inigo Martinez.

The result keeps United one point clear of Bayer Leverkusen - 4-0 winners over Shakhtar Donetsk - at the top of the section.

"We should have won the game by three, four or five goals. But I'm happy we got the win which was most important after Saturday," Rooney told Sky Sports.

"We played some great stuff and defended well. A clean sheet is always pleasing but the three points were the main thing tonight.

"We got an early goal. We could have gone in at half-time 2-0 up and the game would have been more comfortable for us.

"But we didn't and started the second half a bit slow."

Manager David Moyes also paid tribute to the striker's overall display.

"He was absolutely terrific tonight," he said. "I was shouting at him in the last five minutes though.

"We just want a top player like Wayne to play well. I said from day one that his training was great. I think England have seen that. But we need to see it all the time."

Roy Keane accuses former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson of lack of loyalty

http://www.teamtalk.com/images/icon-print.gif

Tuesday 22nd October 2013 19:51

Roy Keane has hit back at Sir Alex Ferguson, accusing his former manager at Manchester United of a lack of loyalty.

In his new book, Ferguson described his former midfield talisman as an 'intimidating, ferocious individual' and claimed he had 'the most savage tongue you can imagine. He can debilitate the most confident person in the world in seconds.'

Keane left United in November 2005, just a few weeks after incurring the wrath of his manager for criticising team-mates in an interview for MUTV.

"I'm OK, quite relaxed," Keane told ITV Sport. "I remember having conversations about loyalty when I was at the club and I don't think he knows the meaning of the word.

"To constantly criticise other players that brought him success ... I won't be losing any sleep over it.

"I just don't think the manager needs to do it. I don't know how many books he's written now.

"A lot of these players helped win a lot of trophies. It's just part of modern life. People like to do books and criticise ex-players."

Ferguson's book reveals how he could not get Keane out quickly enough following the Irishman's interview with MUTV and he spoke straight away to Carlos Queiroz, his assistant at the time.

He said in the book: "He needs to go, Carlos. 100 per cent. Get rid of him.

"In one deep sense, him leaving was the best thing that could have happened... a lot of players were intimidated by him."

The 71-year-old recalls Keane and Van Nistelrooy having to be pulled apart in a separate incident: "His [Keane's] eyes started to narrow, almost to wee black beads. It was frightening to watch, and I'm from Glasgow."

The Scot said his former captain "thought he was Peter Pan" by the time he was forced out of the club in 2005 and, in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, elaborated on his feelings.

Ferguson said: "He was a great player for me, a great captain but he overstepped the mark and the right thing was done. We had to cut the strings.

"We did honour his playing career by paying up his contract, we honoured his testimonial and he did come in and apologise.

"But he has come out several times over the last few years and really spoiled that."

Manchester United boss David Moyes rejects Fergie fear factor

http://www.teamtalk.com/images/icon-print.gif

Sunday 20th October 2013 9:57

David Moyes has rubbished claims Manchester United are struggling because of the absence of Sir Alex Ferguson.

United stuttered to a 1-1 home draw against Southampton on Saturday to leave the reigning champions eight points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal and only four above the relegation zone.

Moyes was handpicked by Ferguson as his successor in the summer as the veteran manager called time on a 26-and-half-year reign at Old Trafford and his team have begun the new campaign in lacklustre fashion with one win in four home league games.

Some critics have suggested visiting players now head to Old Trafford confident of upsetting the hosts, but Moyes said: "I think the fear factor is from the team on the pitch, that's always the case.

"The players are the thing because of their quality. Obviously Sir Alex has a great history and there is all his experience but the players will always be what matters on the pitch."

Despite the early wobbles for Moyes since moving from Everton, Ferguson has insisted that winning any trophy in his first season would be a creditable performance.

It took Ferguson nearly four years following his arrival at Old Trafford from Aberdeen to win his first silverware, with the 1990 FA Cup success giving him the breathing space he needed to set the club on the path to 13 English League titles and two Champions League triumphs.

"For David, winning a trophy would be a fantastic achievement," Ferguson told MUTV.

"No matter what it is - the League Cup, FA Cup, European Cup or Premier League. It is not easy winning a trophy in our league because you could say there are six teams fighting for the league."

Ferguson was in the stands on Saturday and would have been frustrated to see Adam Lallana scramble in Southampton's equaliser in the 89th minute to cancel out Robin van Persie's early strike.

And Moyes was upset at the inability of his players to kill off the game having led for so long.

"It's disappointing because we wanted to get a bit of momentum going and we weren't able to do that," the Scot added.

"We didn't do well enough defensively. We work on that in training but we should probably have put the game to bed earlier on. But we've got to do better at set-pieces, make sure we defend it and make sure we're harder to score against than we were."
